From memory, it was one of the first radar assisted collisions, at least, the first involving large loss of life.
The problem with using radar to avoid collision in low visibility is that it tends to give a misleading impression that the navigator is fully informed. This is particularly a problem when dealing with moving objects such as other ships that don't stay in one place, and is especially a problem when this impression (that the fog is not a problem) is used to justify operation at high speed, as is often the case with passenger liners with a schedule to keep.
