About a hundred years ago, my mother (a uni student) went home with a friend to the friend's home on a property out of Oakey in Queensland. At the time they were fighting a losing battle against prickly pear. During the visit my mother came off her horse into prickly pear, and got a lot of prickles in some very uncomfortable places. Sort of spoiled the holiday, I gather.
