I was thinking that the other day... and what happened to all the station wagons? Both Ford and Holden they were a staple product. There were hundreds and thousands of them on the roads.
Now I would only see maybe 1-2 in a day on the road.
The scrap yards must be full of them.

Some were huge, particularly the Fords.
I had an XD,then XE,company vehicles.
We had a HZ wagon for years,253,4 speed.Liked a drink, bloody easy to work on.
Eventually replaced it with a VN 6 seater wagon.
The VN used about half the fuel the HZ used....with about 50% more go.[biggrin]
The people moved first to people mover vans and have now moved on to city 4 x 4 type vehicles. Is a global phenomenon not just Australia. This change away from even sedans and hatch backs now is the reason Ford and GM and others have cut so many models in the last couple of years. The volume is just not there any more. BMW sells more 4 x 4 than sedans
John Cadogan did a video quite a while ago discussing the benefits of station wagons and people movers vs SUV's and 4x4's now doing the same family tasks. For lots of folks, it boiled down to fashion trends and the cool factor winning vs practicality and saving some $$.
It's always so satisfying to watch craftsmen at work.

Relative rolled an excavator a while ago. Had a quote to recover it which seemed a bit much. Upgraded a truck and with the use of another excavator was able to recover it. Cost less than the quote and still had the truck for the business
In all I had 9 Ford Station wagons (3.company cars)
Loved them. Great family vehicles.
Lost count how many nights I slept in the back of the Station Wagons, One of them I had "Falcon Lodge" written on the side :-)
Just needed as much insulation underneath you as on top as the floor can get damn cold at night
But hey, if it rained, It had to rain a whole lot before you got wet feet! Stuff your tent.
The XD, XF, AU were 6 seaters (Catholic pack) and the XF had 750k on the clock before it rotted out in the usual places - the scuttle and the tailgate hinges.

I believe it was a change of Materials,Design & Fuel economy. SUVs made a huge impact especially if loaded with all the Gizmos.
Look how Automobile Air Conditioning changed just for starters. It left the olde worlde compressor & controllers at the starting blocks.
Today it is pretty much instantaneous Cool & Heat.
