I hear you Saulman. We had a XD Fairmont wagon with a manual gearbox when I was in my teens. Loved that car! Funny thing is, my mum still talks about it as her favourite car of all time.

On British TV these days, Land Rovers ARE called Jeeps.

When I was about 6~7 yo, (not long after the invention of the wheel) I saw a Series with a black and silver oval, in the standard rear position, with Jeep cast into it, rather than Land Rover. This confused me, but I assumed it was badge engineering, similar to BMC's offering identical vehicles with Austin or Morris badges. It was many years later, that I assumed it was badge engineering by the owner with a sense of humour.

I can't find it at the moment (I think it is in a book I have lent), but unless I am mistaken, some time about 1950 or a little later, Rover contemplated producing Jeeps under licence with Landrover mechanicals, and actually built a prototype. From memory this was an idea from Willys to try and market Jeeps in the Sterling Area.

For those with short memories, much of the world used to be divided into Sterling and Dollar areas, those places with their currency freely convertible to pounds or dollars. These were enforced by tariffs and currency regulations, that, for example, enabled free export of Australian produce to most of the British Empire in exchange for protecting British and Australian manufacturing from US imports.

Sterling was roughly the British Empire, and Dollar roughly the Americas, although Canada was in an ambiguous position, being partly in both. US car manufacturers usually had to have factories in Canada to sell there, and also exported vehicles and parts to the Empire, but this was tempered by easy and largely free movement across the border.

Seems it's not what you catch, it's that you catch.

Yes, Rover dropped a CJ5 body onto a Series 2 chassis and it was very doable.

I had a magazine article on it years ago, including photos.
