Some Vic western district squatter descendants have beach holiday houses at places like Peterborough and other seaside villages west of Cape Otway.
Any ocean beach west of the Cape cops the full swell of the southern ocean.
Standard beach equipment for the matriarchs of these families (apart from towels, buckets and spades, etc) used to include a hammer, star picket and some lengths of rope.
Star picket was belted in above the high tide line, kids ankles attached to it with the rope so they couldn't get near the water while mum slept off the previous night's Grand Cru.
