Had a shard of steel break off a crowbar that I was hitting with a hammer and it got lodged deep into the flesh on my ankle, it's about 7mm long x 5mm wide x 3mm thick
Doctor had a good dig and eventually found it and got it out, he reckons it was 5mm away from a main artery. Goes to show why they say to wear safety glasses when using hammers etc...

Safety glasses are no use when the shard goes into your leg

Don't worry I made the joke "lucky I was wearing my safety glasses". But in all seriousness if it hit me in the eye and I wasn't wearing glasses I would have most definitely lost my eye. The wound was so much like a bullet wound it freaked me out lol

My dad used to have a selection of crappy old hammers, chisels etc that all had seriously mushroomed heads on them as he never owned a grinder of any kind. When I was about 14 one of my mates was using one of dad's hammers on some project we were doing and a piece just like the one above lodged itself in his upper left cheek, about an inch from his eye. No safety glasses, naturally. A sobering moment.

I honestly was awake for hours trying to get to sleep last night, the thought of what could have happened kept me awake all night. Took a while to sink in after it happened but I keep showing everyone at work the shrapnel to try and get the point across that it can actually happen
