The sound medical reason being that the surface inside the fundamental, absorbs stuff faster than oral introduction.

This brings to mind a true exchange, between an instructor and course participant, when I first joined SES. It was SES-101, First Aid. These were the days before we'd ever heard of accreditation, anyone with a knowledge of the subject could teach it. The instructor, in this instance, was an ex-Army medic. A top bloke, practical, quick witted and an abundance of common sense.

The top bloke was explaining dehydration and stressing that if a casualty was found suffering from the issue, that they should be given very small quantities of water, to prevent regurgitation, exacerbating the condition. He further said that sucking an ice cube or wet face washer was ideal.

The student, who was an RN, turned out to be a right PIA, who continually tried to demonstrate her superior knowledge and that she was smarter than everyone, interjected that to hasten rehydration, water in small quantities, could be introduced anally.

With absolutely no hesitation, the instructor replied with "I don't advise, when you see your neighbour looking hot and bothered, after mowing his lawn, on a hot day, that you race over and stick the garden hose up his arse."

Not even an Icy Popsicle thing or a handful of Ice Cubes? They are much shorter than a Std 1/2" Hose & if said hose has been laying out in the sun all day..................well the mind boggles.

After my old Dad had to give up Trucking on the wharves at Port Adelaide he obtained a job as a Tally Clerk on the Port Adelaide & Outer Harbour wharves which to me was a bonus as he was able to scavenge a lot of Foreign Ciggy Packets which were collectable by lots of kids back then.

That is the good news. The not so good was that he died of Ca. @ 49 (caused by who knew what in those days but maybe it was the crap in ciggy packets he was collecting for his #2 Son) I digress. Anyway, he had to peruse the Shipping News each day to see what ships were arriving in case he was called in to work. River Loddon cropped up many times as I recall in later years as did many others when ANL had a respectable Coastal Fleet.


Shipping news is no longer published in the Advertiser 'cos only container ships seem to call here these days & of course they don't require Tally Clerks as such. He would probably be glad of that as he would be 115 years of age & that is no job for an older geezer.


I often wonder whether part of his job was the consignment in the Chain of Ex A bomb & Radio active cargo from Maralinga being sent back to the UK but then I reckon there were plenty of Health Hazards around then but as Maralinga [bigrolf] doesn't have a Port, cargo could have been sent through Port Augusta. Who knows?

ED. Back then one could easily see 6 or 8 OS steamers waiting for Pilots & Berths at the the Anchorage off Semaphore from many nations Post War. Probably like most Ports in OZ.
