Makes you wonder... Suzuki managed to make it comply and on a cursory inspection, they don't look all that different structurally. Clearly there was more to the decision process.

Said it before. Tata have zero interest in having a LR in the Old Deefer, 7X series market. Tata already have a number of entrants there. LR is being pushed further and further up into the 'premium luxury' segment. "Roots" mean nothing to them. So much so that it was really odd to see them trying to sue Ineos over the Grenadier's "styling".

The Jimny doesn't fit into the segment at all. I mean, have you seen one? It would fit in the back of the real 130.

Yeah, well I know you’ve seen one. My point was that the things are tiny. About their only real competitor is another Suzuki.

I'm sure you're right enough on the first point. I guess I was just indulging in pre-nostalgia (I am now claiming copyright on that term: I think I just made it up) for the Defender-That-Never-Was. I'm getting all misty-eyed for a thing that isn't. In times to come, I will sit by the fire, telling the great, great nephews and nieces tales about this amazing little car that I remember which never existed. I think there's a lesson there for all of us. If anybody knows what it is, please give me a shout...

Yeah, I know the Jimny is tiny. I've seen 'em and driven 'em. Bloody marvellous. I was just making the observation that a throwback Defender which was a distinctly different "heritage" model and still compliant with current regs would have been......incredibly cool (and, I suspect, have been beloved by many fellow anoraks).

Oh, I hear ya. It's really a pity that someone like Radcliffe had pick up the ball, starting from absolute scratch, when Tata could have easily done a Grenadier thing. They are a huge car company, after all.

    Pre-nostalgia. Love it.
