A governor can be fitted to control engine rpm and hence pto.
This was quite a heavy unit, about 300mm x150mm ,fitted to engine, and v belt driven.
in the cab , a notched rack and black handle to set speed

Reminded me that I still have a Manual for this showing all the connections & details but one thing the images (photos) don't show is the PTO hole in the rear cross member on a 107". Omitted or didn't use one? Odd.

Correct, unless it was a diesel engine that had both from the factory.

Worth pointing out that the ratchet control does not necessarily mean the vehicle has been at some stage fitted with a governor. This was fitted as a hand throttle to the vast majority, if not all, Series 1,2 &2a Landrovers built in Australia. (probably excepting 80") Certainly fitted to all the ones I have ever owned or worked with (except for a 2a that was a private import).

John, in the old Dad’s ‘54 and ‘57 Landrover s it was not a ratchet ,
it was a horizontal notched rack, just under the dash ,, at a very tempting position for small boys, almost as tempting as the ignition key.

That is exactly what was being described above (perhaps incorrectly) as a ratchet. The notches are asymmetrical, so perhaps the description of 'ratchet' is correct.

The S1 in my sig has one of those.Handy when using the capstan winch.

As kids we didn't fiddle with it,but Dad always hid the ignition key somewhere.

But that didn't stop us,we were amazed how far it would go on the starter....

And the rattly tunes it would play with a handful of Qld nuts down the exhaust pipe.

That often got us a sore arse though
