I actually had one of those years ago I used extensively out of my trappers camp. Very useful for cutting through bush, preparing trap seats, and moving traps. Also useful to stun the possums with before dispatch. It was stolen when my camp was ransacked while I was in town getting stores. After it was stolen I reverted to a malayan-conflict era machete and an estwind hammer. The combined tool with hammer on one side and hatchet on the other are called Carpenters framing hatchets I believe. A nail pulling notch on the inside of the hatchet blade.
I scored one of those Framing Hammers from the old ADELAIDE East End Produce Market yonks ago when it was closing down. Used by the blokes making & repairing the old F & V crates. Still have it, & it comes out on occasions when I have the need. Just as you described it.
