It had been there since Friday night. Barge operator told us he had caught the last barge over Friday night & was told to wait until the morning to head up to the point because the tide was 1/2 in. He was driving rite at the bottom of the dunes & hit one of the holes the miners had dug full of soft sand & water so was like quicksand. I had a mate who worked at the State Gov Workshop & he was telling me about this idiot who had taken a new L/C up the beach that got swamped which had tyre tracks over the roof that they were going to have to rebuild because the insurance wouldn't pay to fix / replace it.
My father drowned a brand new fully loaded LWB Series 3 LR in Eli Ck,on Fraser.
Two high tides went over it before we got it out, with the help of Syd and his Bltz from Happy Valley.
Still had the tape on the back, at the top of the rear window, with"Please pass running in" written on it in black nikko.

Any way, back to Annand & Thompson, all fixed a week later, from then on it was called the Yellow Submarine.

There are some good pics around but we can't seem to find them ATM.
There is one shot of fish swimming between the Bull Bar and the front of the vehicle, taken standing on the spare on the bonnet.

My father almost lost his Series II Station Wagon when we were leaving Freser Is back in 1970. We left Happy Valley before sunrise to catch the low tide but there was a bushfire on the island and the westerly wind was blowing the smoke across the relatively flat beach. Under these conditions heading in the right direction was not easy and dad started to head east, a wave caught him and stopped the motor. I was in my Series II SWB and, with the help of a friend, had a short tow rope (this was before snatch straps) onto him very quickly but couldn't tow him and decided to unhook, move to a safe distance up the beach and employ my Capstan winch with a 1-1/4" sisal rope which snapped before moving the SW. Last resort was the 12mm steel cable I was carrying on my front bumper. This was quickly deployed with a few wraps on the Capstan and I was anxiously expecting the shear pin to snap as the tide was rising and waves were now washing through the cab of the SW but thankfully the sand released the SW before the shear pin broke.
So after a bit of WD40 and drying out and the sun now rising we were on our way again and all ended up OK, dare I say with a very relieved father & mother.

Sorry but we were too busy to take pictures and in any case my near new Pentax camera had fallen off the front mudgard (I had placed it there there while I helped push a bogged Jeep onto the ferry) while we were heading up to Happy Valley on the low tide. Thankfully a good honest person found it on the beach, left his contact details with Gordon Elmer, the ferry operator, and I was able to pick it up at Beaudesert on our way home. So another good outcome from an eventful trip.

Showing my age now, with all that happening 52 years ago.

Those petrol series died pretty quickly with a good splash.

My Father always used to say if you hit the water hard enough to splash on the windscreen, start looking for the can of RP7,i think it was called in those days.

I was with one of my brothers in Weipa(he lived there for quite a few years),in his SWB '72 LR,and we were driving through some very deep water one night.Didnt even see it until we hit it,but pretty slowly. The next day, check over the vehicle, there was no oil left in the air cleaner,it was all washed out, went through the engine, but surprisingly it kept running.
We came back from Fraser during the '74 floods,in the S1 this trip, dodging waves, and trees washed onto the beach from sand mining, rising King tide, trailer in tow, many of the wooden bridges on the inland tracks had been washed away, luckily Gordon waited for us,saw our lights, through the sea,up onto the barge, blowing a fierce gale, tied her on.We were in a cyclone.Off at Inskip, back home 5 hours later,a trip i will never forget.

We never had a problem with my father's S3 stopping due to water on the distributer, used to give it a good spray with WD40 before leaving home & each morning while we were up the beach, but we did have problems with cracking exhaust manifolds when the water hit the hot manifold. Once home we would weld them up & needed to replace the manifold after 3 lots of cracks. I had a Mini when I was 18, 1st sign of rain out with the WD40, only stopped once when I hit the flood water in Rocklea Death Trap at speed but was going fast enough to make it out the other side, quick squirt of WD40 & away I went.

I think it was more the Series 1 that had the issue,it would splutter and stop, some spray fixed it,until the next flooded creek,or waterhole.

Maybe it was different,to the S3,or it had a problem.

Stalled a mini in the rain one night. Could see the face of the driver behind who thought we were going to block the narrow road. Out and open bonnet car starts up straight away. Had an ignition problem which rather than fixing had solved by breaking plastic cap off solenoid and pressing button that was hidden under it. Had stalled as new girl friend was distracting and not paying enough attention to driving rather than water and distributor making friends

    Hi,
Having the dizzy just behind the grill didn't help there either.
    Cheers

Could be Vic, Tas, SA, WA or NSW (at a pinch). Any idea where?

From memory, UK Minis had a plastic shield around the dizzy but omitted on AUS exports, the rationale being 'Australia is both hot and it never rains...'
no amount of feedback could change their minds.
