Yes, right on the date. Fits right in with my earliest memories of " what Christmas is like".

Not a single Holden seen, not many cars, so probably still petrol rationing, and all new looking cars are English, makes it pre-1948. Plenty of pre-war cars.

Groceries come from the grocer, not the supermarket.

Would have been pretty attractive to Europeans recovering from the ravages of WWII, which was probably its purpose.

It's attractive to me. I think I may go live there. I may be able to afford one of those "older homes" as I couldn't possibly afford one of the "modern" ones.
Mind you, I'm not sure suburban Adelaide has changed all that much.

Remember one of my uncles saying that while on a fully paid tour in the UK in the early forties what really struck him about the UK was what he considered to be the shocking standard of what they thought were the even the better houses and general public facilities provided by government. He had grown up in what would today be called Housing Commission house so nothing fancy

You're dead right there, although these days I think they frown on sprinklers...

Unlike Melbourne, which is all but unrecognizable from even twenty years ago.

It was aimed squarely at the British, with Europeans coming in large numbers without any persuasion. Although Britain suffered perhaps less than other parts of Europe, these immigration ads were intended to help Australia retain its Britishness, which was being eroded by the number of non-English speaking immigrants, many of them refugees.

As a reminder of the changes, when I was at school in the 1940s, I only know of a single boy at the school in the seven years I was there who did not come from an British background (he was from Chile!). A few years ago I visited the school and did a presentation to the kids - not a single "British" face in the hall; by the looks 90% South Asian, the rest S.E. Asian!

When I was at the nearby highschool, we had, I think, two or three from eastern Europe, and one Chinese. That is the whole school over five years, not just my class!

Well, most people from the rest of Europe that came here at that time were DPs, who needed no encouragement other than the promise of a roof and full bellies. Two years of enforced camp life would have been a small price to pay.

As for school, I'm about ten years behind you, and we had no students that were "different", but I was sent to a "toff" school, C of E. The most exotic kids there were a couple of Jewish boys, whose families had possibly done it harder than anyone else. I also returned recently(ish). I'm not sure the C of E bit has survived....

PS, given the post war austerities in the UK I'm not sure they needed a great deal of encouragement either. Australia was prosperous "on the sheep's back", or so we were taught in said school. Still, we were later taught about the "Domino Theory", so perhaps a pinch of salt is required.

That old Thames wasn't parking, just picking up a load of bricks.
