I recall talking to a RAAF officer involved with extending the service life of the aircraft around the time of the F-111's retirement from RAAF service. He said there were strong rumours it was prematurely let go due to the disaster of resealing the fuel tanks and injuring so many people. Apparently the people up top who were responsible wanted it gone soonest, so as to minimise the tarnishment of their careers...

And then they buried them deep in the ground somewhere in in NSW I recall. It wasn't their money.
All these bloody experts! The Navy bought two ex US navy amphibious landing ships which was later found to be a rust bucket. That probably got secretly sunk one dark night somewhere deep & the people responsible probably still kept their jobs. ED. One was scrapped in its entirety The other I know not where.

There appears to be an idea that if it is Yank then it must be top drawer. I wonder if the recently purchased UK landing ship has had a good history yet, HMAS Choules.
