Month-long trip out of Wollongong NSW - where would you go?

Looking at a month-long trip in October or thereabouts. Bit of a prelude to a lap in the next year or two.

Have a capable vehicle, good fuel range and are well set up for extended bush camping. Will be a single-vehicle trip.

Have seen much of NSW east of the Newell Hwy. Had a good stretch in Tassie. Travelled the run from the Barry Way into Melbourne and covered the Upper Murray, so still plenty to see in VIC. Have visited Uluru, the Olgas, Alice and toured the West Macdonnell Ranges in the NT. Have done no touring in QLD or SA.

The Cape is the first thing to pop into mind, but thinking if we drive that far we should spend several months in QLD.

Next idea is Mungo NP and Broken Hill, but that leads to Lake Eyre and the Simpson Desert and a ton of driving in four weeks.

How about Mungo NP, return along the Murray and through VIC High Country after the trails open mid October?

Or a loop taking in SW VIC, the Grampians and Mallee?

    What would you do?

Southern Atherton Tablelands, the best bit of our wonderful country.
Include a visit to Babinda Creek and the Boulders. Return via
Inott hot springs, Undarra, Longreach, Winton, Blackall, Charleville, Cunnamulla. If time permits head to Thargomindah, Noccundra and Corner Country
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

NSW South coast to the border and up into the high country from Batemans Bay to the border again, best beaches and fishing with the mountains only minutes away, been here for 20 years and still haven't seen it all, Regards Frank.

V8Ian, that's about a 6000km trip and we'd be belting through it. I think QLD deserves more of my time.

Tank, yeah that's my go-to area. Like you I've not seen all of it but I have given it a fair old crack. That whopping great rate race just north of me means I head south by default.

That's six days driving, leaving you 22-25 days sightseeing.

Flinders and Gawler Ranges are very good lots to see and do. Bit dissapointed with Mungo NP. Up through Milaparinka Depot Glen and to the corner is good.

Plenty of ideas in our EDJITS Trip reports. Just put that in an AULRO search and check out Martyn's photos and log. Includes The Cape, Simpson, South Australia and much more.

    Home - Broken Hill - Coober Pedy - Marla - Oodnadatta Track - Birdsville Track - Birdsville - Boulia - Winton - ???? - Home

That'll give you a few things to see in SA and QLD. I've done a various solo trips around these areas (inc Strezlecki track) without any issues.

I wouldn't be doing Simpson Desert solo but that's just me.

Cameron Corner has some good bush camping if you end up round that way too.

The Darling River run is a good trip, we did this and included the Macquarrie at the start, then the Darling and then the Murray from Wentworth and the Murrimbidgee back to home(Helensburgh) just up the road from you last camp was Oura Beach near Wagga.

It was just over 3 weeks, we are doing 1/2 a lap in July, Home to WA, then up to the Kimberley, Darwin and south East to home.
    Cheers Baz.

Are you going to include the Pilbara in that Baz? Some lovely gorges around that area, including a few of the less frequented ones that have surfaced in the 'Where am I' comp.

How long are you going for?
    Roger
