Son is in Cannon Hill which is 10 mins to airport on city side. We are further south at Springwood which is 20 mins to airport. Mt Gravat-Carindale area also handy.
There are a lot of choices.

We live in Bald Hills , very convenient and pleasant, maybe 450,00 - 500,000 will get you in , quite a frew rentals.

But recently looked at an investment property, and was very surprised how cheap Bells Pocket/ Spitfire street area was. If your after a biggish block, for stuff , well worth checking out.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

As said above if you can afford the tolls in the tunnels/gateway you can live just about anywhere in Brisbane. We are 30 mins from the airport if the traffic isn't too bad and we live halfway to the Gold Coast in a rural setting.

Town Houses and units wont be suitable for us.
The pink thing in my avatar has a couple of mates and loves to greet the morning and farewell the evening sun.
Rural/Semi rural would be great, but suspect a stretch with regular travel? Very happy to wrong.
We dont have a need for a huge space for vehicles etc. It will only be Mrs Strangy 4 feathered friends, the 130, hatchback and a bike and tools.
Tolls..hmm..hadnt considered those, better look those up
I thought we were hard done by losing unlimited speed limits.

There plenty of rentals around, as said (maybe not a townhouse) rent then look for a location that suits You may be surprised what you find.

We are at Alderley on the Ashgrove side. It only takes us 30 minutes to the airport most times via the Airport Link Tunnel and cab fare under $50 last time we did it.
It is a really nice area and we have some acres of bushland (Banks Street Reserve) at the end of our street and a lot of bike paths handy. Nice area but may be quite expensive.

    Cheers,
    Russ

And you live in a townhouse?

And you park your Land Rovers on the road!

Strangy, are in the north lakes area. Unless the road is shot, easy 30 to the airport. West of the highway, there its still a bit of rural. 25 minutes to Bribie island or Glasshouse mountains.
    Cheers, BDave.
