Thread: Discovery tyre change?

Discovery tyre change?

We have done around 47,000km on the original XPC 16" tyres and sadly have collected a gash on the side wall which makes the tyre irreparable.

Replacement XPC quoted at $390 so I am considering doing a change to another less expensive tyre.

We have another vehicle we use for 4WD so the disco is mainly a bitumen based vehicle which pulls our small caravan.

We may do some easy 4wd on our trip around Austrlalia but nothing extravagent.

The plan is to replace front 2 tyres with something like Bridgestone, Cooper or Hankook and then later complete the switch to get to all tyres being the same supplier.

Any thoughts as to what I should do?

regards

Hi Harry
I think you will find that you will have problems with transmission "wind up" due to enequal tyre diameters. On a constant 4WD system you should be replacing all 4 tyres at once, tyre rotation at 5000km intervals is also important to get maximum Ks out of your tyres.

Harry, where abouts in Perth are you? I have 3 good XPC tyres in the shed that were on my Disco. They are approximately 50% tread left. If you want them you can have them. I will be coming down to Perth on Jan 5/6th and can bring at least 2 down if you want or if you know anyone heading down from Kalgoorlie/Kambalda that can take them down for you earlier. Cost is nothing, you can have them. I was hanging on to them and going to use as trailer tyres but now I have the Fender with bigger tyres they are of no use. I found them quite a good tyre but did the same as you and the replacement price was ridiculous so bought new BFG ATs. Long term look at BFG AT's, MT's or Cooper STT's. Have used all these. I will be heading to Rockingham so can possibly drop them off somewhere south of the river. If you are North you may have to meet us somewhere.
These will get you through for a while, but if I were you I would be buying a new tyre every month until you get a full set of 5 and then have them fitted when these are worn out. Saves and outlay of $1100 in one hit.

same as Craig when I had my Disco - replacement of the XPC were too much so replaced all four tyres with BFG AT.

BFG AT last forever, are a tough AT tyre but there is not much more road noise than the XPC's and will be better for your trip you are planning.

LRH your 10c is well recieved.

Being new to the 4WD tyre buying game I am not sure what BFG AT are but I am sure I will soon find out.

With the kind offer from Craig I can now solve my problem at my speed rather than have to rush into it now.

What a good site this is as it saved me from making a potentially costly error due to transmission wind up, whatever that is.

best regards

ok...lets go.....

first up.....bfg at = BF Goodrich All Terrain
they are basicaly a cross between an off-road tread and a road tread tyre....

now....for the minute difference in tread depth it wouldnt give any transmission
wind-up......even though it is a constant 4wd.....there are three open diffs....
which have the job of differentiating between different speeds....(hence the name
differential...or diff for short)

of course it is best to have all tyres identical.....doesnt work the diffs any more
than they need to......

hope this helps......
