Any Recommendations for Stationary Bike Trainers

Hi Guys, For those of you who cycle or exercise on your Road bikes or Mountain Bikes

can you recommend any descent bike trainers ?

I've seen a Few on the interweb but not sure if i should go for fan type or oil type ?

The Oil seems to give the closes impression of actually riding on the road from what Ive read.

I'd like something that I can set up quickly wihtout taking the Back wheel off

    Thanks in advance

Cyclops. It is expensive but you get what you pay for. It's a lot easier to use than the $100 special for Anaconda. I use it almost every day.

Thanks PR , I saw the Cyclops on the Web , seems to be in top 5 in the reviews.

Edit : Just saw the Cyclops with the Clutch Knob , to adjust the tension between the tyre and Drum. Is this the one youre using PR ?

I've got a cycleops also and I'm really not impressed by it to be honest. They're noisy and low in quality. Actually its now just an expensive bike stand.

For regular trainers, I do really like the Jetblack Z1. Its a smooth and relatively quiet unit. The resistance in it is relatively high, so you will need to accept that the speed you're training at isn't going to represent that which you'd achieve on the road - just use your gears. Its also a set resistance trainer, so many aftermarket training programs like Zwift, Perfpro etc are mapped and are able to calculate the power you're making on this trainer based on your speed and that opens up a whole new world of interactive training and/or computerised training programs.

If you want a full controlled trainer (ie the computer controls the drag, calculates power and power etc), I do like the Wahoo Kickr Snap which is a great value wheel on trainer. This allows full interaction with your computer and the computer automatically alters the drag in the trainer to simulate the road etc on the screen or a programmed workout.
    Cheers

Jetblack Z1 and Cycleops pro looks almost the same Simon , there are subtle differences i.e the clutches and prices are on par.
Both my wife and I will be using it so id like something that is descent quality. not saying either of them are not.

    I used Jet black

really only to keep the legs moving when weather is foul!

selling it now though as I don't use it anymore.

you can probably pick one up second hand for a good price.

Like slunnie said, wahoo kicker if you have the money for it and are wanting to do programmed training (hell, there are programs for it where you can do your details France stages etc).

Jetblack make low cost but decent quality trainers.

Your other option are grab some rollers. I train for 24 hour solos on the mountain bike but use a road bike on one - it just gets boring on the fixed wheel trainer. If you are comfortable with your bike handling skills, they are good and easy to use. There are no changing wheels or clamping things to set up, just whack your bike on and pedal.

It all comes down to budget and what sort of training you want to do. Bit more info on that and we can all be a bit more precise with answers.

Is there a reason you want to use one instead of getting out on the road or trail? I spent a fair bit of time using one last year because I couldn't get out on the road. While I found it was useful in terms of pedal stroke and cadence as you can't stop without music or watching TV I found it hard to keep up the motivation sitting there going nowhere. Now I'm back out on the road I'm not using mine at all.
