Cheap LED Headlights. Do you get what you pay for?

    Hello wise forum.

I'm after more output from Puma headlights (who isn't) and considering upgrading to LED. I'm wondering what you get for your money as the variance in prices are huge.

I like the look of these ones from eBay...

1pr Landrover Defender 90 110 130 County 7" Headlights Flash AMBER Land Rover | eBay

... but compared to other available options they would be considered cheap?

What would I be getting if I spent close to $1k compared to something (like the eBay ones) at a third of the price?

    Thoughts?

I've compared a few cheap Chinese LED headlights to each other, as well as a $1600 pair of JW Speakers See this thread

The main down side to the cheap ones is there is very little difference in brightness from low beam to high beam.

The expensive projector type lights like JW Speaker have a much 'cleaner' beam pattern, see that thread link above. I've never driven with these myself, but feedback from customers is "awesome".

Mid priced 'Truck Lites' have great light output, but being a reflected beam, they are a bit patchy for my liking.

Of the cheap lights I compared, these are the ones I've stuck with on my County because they have a much better high beam than the others. They are not marked though, so are not compliant.

I see there is a new version of that light that does have compliance markings, and they're not unlike the lights from the link in the above post.

Back to your original question, "Do you get what you pay for" ? In my opinion, that's always the case, better quality usually means a higher price.
Value for money is a bit different. Of all the cheap Chinese headlights I've tried, none have failed, and for the price, I'm quite happy with the ones I'm using.

My auto sparky mate has had trouble with some of the cheaper LED lights and has noticed that some of them will create interference with the radio - almost like a static noise where the JW Speakers he has not had any of those problems.

Thanks for the link Murray and well done on the comparisons, it's very interesting and a great read.

I spoke to the seller of the lights I linked to and he mirrored what you were saying re the strength of the highbeams on his lights. He said many of his customers use spot lights as their highbeams. I have some IPF spot lights on my Puma that I've used once in 8 years. I could adjust these for use as my highbeams, at least they would get some use.

Anyone know of any downside to this approach?

For a one off purchase you're just as well to get them from an Aussie supplier on Ebay 105W Round LED Head lights DRL+TURN
I can certainly get them cheaper directly from a supplier in China, but not worth the hassle unless you order quite a few. I don't bother with selling LED lights much any more as it's so competitive and the market is flooded, for example, I have some old stock of light bars which I've been selling off to friends and customers below cost because the prices have come down so much over the last couple of years.
