    Peak Oil

In course of reading the threads on petrol vs diesel.. I've been doing a little thinking about the "Peak Oil" theories that are out there. I'd suggest having a read of this if you haven't heard of this.

    http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1515141.htm

I believe that if we haven't already passed peak oil, we're certainly at peak now. That means that prices really are going to keep on moving up.

I think that what will get our defender is not age.. rust... or mechanical.. but the fact that we won't be able to afford to run it, or probably more importantly use it for it's intended purpose.. exploring Australia.

That should not affect diesel's as much as petrol because you can switch to biodiesel, as long as that is available.
It is just a matter of time until fossil fueled vehicles become too expensive to run. Maybe before then the governments and industry will be able to come up with a viable alternative whatever that may be :?:

There have been viable alternatives around for about 30 years at least. The big oil companies have bought up all the patents to most of them to stop them being produced untill we are out of oil so they can keep getting richer. Some research and development is starting to proceed. There are steam, hydrogen, compressed air, water, dedicated lpg, lng, hybrid, electric technology etc technologies out there. I know one Aussie guy that basically invented an engine that could run on water some years ago, not sure exactly how it ran or how it started but as he could not get it into production eventually sold the rights to a major oil company for a couple of million after they hounded him. He was a local TAFE teacher.

Yes there are other forms that have been suppressed for a long time. It will just take the governments to wake up and tell the oil companies to shove it . I am sure that won't happen until somebody like USA can't be guarranteed enough fuel to run their armed forces for the next X years.
