    Best Engine

The small block chev is the most overated engine ever foisted onto the gen.pop. and chev still cant getaway from pushrod OHV engines, even though now they are using a copy of the Ford FE engine of the mid 60's with extended skirt and cross bolted mains as found in the FE Ford 427's from the mid 60's. Same head port config.
Ford engines revolutionised racing with the small block Ford V8 dominating Indy racing and ending an era for Offy's and others, Same with F1, winningest engine ever in F1, destroyed Ferrari's domination in Sports car racing and Le Mans, Chev is stuck with pushrod OHV tech., Ford and the rest of the world has moved on, chevs do make good boat anchors though, Regards Frank.

Too many American engines in that list. It's supposed to be 'significant ' engines, not best-selling. What about Alfa, Saab turbo, Maserati, Lambo, original Jeep donk. Surely some truck engines should be included? How about rocket engines? What about motorcycles? Trains? Planes? Ships? That list is far too limited.

Hmm,, Me, I like the Jag 6,,, very nice engine, I've had two of them,, very quick and smooth they were too.
Had two of the Slant 6's too,,, quite a good strong engine I thought,,, right up until I cracked the head
Had a couple of the VW's too,,, lovely sounding motor I think, and one when learning to drive, really allows you to know and understand how it all works,,, gear changing-engine revs etc.

    Ultimately, I'm a Ford man,,,

Aurelio Lampredi's superb FIAT twin cam would get my vote above anything from Chev. It wound up being developed into the Lancia Delta Integrale, one of the greatest rally cars ever. If you're going to include 'planes then the Rolls Royce Merlin would be top three, if not top.

Its a motor magazine Mick,, I guess they only wanted to know about the "popular" stuff that the commoners want. They did say there are faster or more economical about.

Pity they were so badly built in the 70s. A glorious engine. To see what can be achieved, check out the Eagle Speedster. 4.6 Litre I think.

For a little while I had a ratty old 2.4 Jag, MK1 . That engine was amazing really, considering the capacity and the weight it was dragging around.

    BDAs, wow, what a donk.

Personally, i'd rather a Holden V8 to a Chev. Check out what Repco did to a 308.

Little bit surprised no one has mentioned our own alloy V8, derived from the Buick. Poorly executed, I know, but a great design. The power TVR was getting from them was nuts. I remember reading, when MG put that engine onto the 'B', that it was 19 lbs lighter than the stinking B Series they took out. There are a couple of them racing in Historics, and they are quick.
