The doors clearly hint at an origin pre-87 (door handles), and as it obviously started life as a station wagon, it almost certainly was County trim as suggested.
My guess is that the rearmost axle is driven from the back end of the pinion on the intermediate axle, via a dog clutch that is disengaged when on the bitumen. The intermediate axle will have been a Ford axle as this is a hypoid axle, allowing this shaft to clear the differential.
