It has throttling vanes and a highly efficient DC/variable speed motor that was developed by the CSIRO, but this family are pretty unique in that the compressor and motor are totally oil free, the shaft for the turbine (it's a two stage centrifugal compressor) and motor are 'floating' via an electromagnetic field.
This particular unit is I think rated at 250kw, it might be a 300kw one, weighs 120kg and is less than 800mm long. They are tiny compared to most traditional compressors.
I had to reset this system Sunday morning.
Why the building was calling for cooling at -8*C ambient I have no idea.
