Tasmainia trip in December to January 2018

    Hi all,

Planning a trip with the family (wife and two teens) from Dec 22nd to Jan 16 and staying around a week in each place.

Starting around Cradle Mountain area over Xmas, then to Hobart over new year, moving on to Coles bay (east coast) then over to the far north west.

We've booked all the accomodation and are now looking for things to do.

Plan on taking it easy and not try and cram heaps into every day!

Going to see the usual touristy things.
Also the wife is an art teacher and will be looking at every possible art gallery on the island!! So that's taken care of half the time!!

My son and I ride mountain bikes so that's high on the list of activities along with bush walking with the whole family.

And it'd be good to get the D2 on some dirt.

So where should we start looking!! Any suggestions welcome!

Ok if you just list a place in the reply and I'll do the research.

    Cheers Lemo

If you want an alternate route from north to south give the Highland Lakes Rd and Marlborough Hwy a look. The MH was dirt the last time I was there and it's very interesting country (Highland Heath and lakes ) with lots of lakes. Plenty of walks/rides up there, it forms part of the Tassie Trail, a great multi day ride. Ben Lomond and Mt Barrow are also good little side trips that will only take a sml ant of time off the highway , an hour or so depending on how many photos and how many time your boys want to ride down them! Both dirt and plenty of switchbacks on the side of a rock hill.

Hi, Check Derby for world class mountain bike trails.

    Plenty of history to explore.

Good bush camp nearby on the Weld River on Frome Rd.

    Cheers

The Weldborough hotel has excellent camping
Blue tier is well worth exploring
Buy this book Off-road Tasmania Guidebook
Montezuma falls is well worth the drive (and the ring river track if you are feeling brave, we did 6KM in 3 hours)
The Sawback range track is challenging and may even be doable if they have fixed the big hole.

    regards,
