    I agree the asking price is a bit high but lets not be too critical of the surface rust. I can't say it looks much worse than mine underneath ... obviously a sign that its been used offroad ... also .. the rust spot in the last picture seems to come from the towbar. I just had my towbar replaced under warranty because it was rusting away after only 18 months from new ... might be the same thing.

    I'd offer $29,500 .. and my phone number. He probably won't take it but will ring you in 3 months time when he gets desperate. Question is how long are you prepared to wait.

    Good luck with the search ...

    Ace: Thanks - I've also seen this advertised on drive.com, but 4" lift and 35" tyres are a bit extreme for me! Plus, I really want a white or green one if possible and I'm not sure what I think of that burgundy.

    GreyLandy: I've emailed him, declining unless he wants to quit it for an "insane" price, so will see what his reply is. He has told me a dealer will give him "around $33K" so that might be his best option.

    Then he should jump at it cause the red book lists it as $22K to $26.5 K as trade in price, aint no dealer going to go over that unless he was trading in on a RR HSE

    Have a look at www.redbook.com.au, give you a good idea on pricing.

    Yep,

    Tell him he's dreaming

    With the rust I reckon from the rear bumper that this may have been the Land Rover that launched a thousand ships. The only way to tell is to get underneath and tap the chassis with a hammer. Particularly in the low spots.

    The attachment of the rear bumper to the chassis rails is a vulnerable area. Its complicated and offers many opportunities for rust to take hold.

    At the front the rust at the ends of the chassis rails is a tell tail. Take offthe end caps and have a good look.

    Does he tow a boat, is there one parked nearby? or act dumb and strike up a conversation about how well it tows and messing about in boats. After all he has a tow bar for a reason.

    Went to Red Book and found this:

    +++++++++++++
    Red Book Code LAND03AH
    2003 LAND ROVER DEFENDER

    110 02MY X-Treme Wagon 4dr Man 5sp 4x4 2.5DT
    Prices based on km 45,000 - 75,000
    Trade in price guide* $22,200 - $24,600
    National average price - private sale* $26,400 - $30,500
    Price when new (RRP) $46,995
    +++++++++++++

    I think their $26,400-$30,500 is seriously optimistic!

    Most 03 110s I've looked at have been in the high $30 thousand area. Don't recall seeing any south of $30k.

    How come?

    Don't get me started!!! I looked for six months, and ended up just buying a new one. Most of that vintage that I saw advertised started out at nearly 40 (one was 45... not kidding), and over then ensuing months/years they will drop to a reasonable level. There were two I could think of that I offered 45 to, and 6 months later they ended up with the last advertised price being 32... LOL.

    When you find a good one, just wait till he breaks, and hope you're the person there when he does.

    As to his 32k trade... what is he buying?? a 100k rangie? It's cleary adjusted... or he's lying.

    Next is the rust. I've been very dissapointed at the quality of LR accessories. The sidesteps have already got heaps of rust on them, and LR have said they will replace them. The tow bar had the paint falling off before I even put it on the car. I'm in two minds about whether to take it off and strip it and paint it, or just wait for it to rust and get another on warranty.

    I just finished repainting my rear cross member after the paint was starting to wear off.... :? Now looks like new

    But mine has done 120,000kms, is one year older, lives a block from the beach and has nothing like the rust this one has in it.

    Just got to be patient, if you can, for the right one.

    I have been told by a LR dealer that all the South African made Defenders have colour coded roofs. Not sure if its true but seems like a good quick way to identify them, he also said that they transfered the build back to the UK due to quality issues. I have been looking for an Extreme for some time as well but for the dollars the Disco is a far nicer car (well that what her indoors & the kids recon). I new I should'nt have gone for the test drive with them, they even had me look at a Nissan Patrol, should be ashamed..............
    I walked away from one Extreme that had / may have been swimming, its Blue 2003 & still for sale in Sydney $35k so be aware.

    Sorry mate but that is bollocks .... All Defender manufacture outside of the UK was halted at the end of 2005 in apparent cost cutting measures, it had nothing to do with quality issues.
