What we managed to find out is that we can request it from archive - but need the details of who did the report etc. So missing the info to do it ourselves.

The rego papers show the right engine number for what's in it, but due to "administrative inefficiency' there's nothing to back it up.

The question really is if the reg papers show this number for the engine why would the 'responsible authority' even question the provenance of same.

In other words you are being expected to prove that they operated correctly to put number on the form. Just coz they can.

Sounds like Australia, IMO. In fact, if the car had been previously registered in Vic in it's current config it would be no problem. Vic at least accept that a vehicle that was registered before should be capable of being registered again. Everything is recorded.

Why, though, do we have different systems across borders? This is Australia, after all, with a population about the same as California's.

It's hard to blame Vic if the records cannot be produced. After all, they are liable for the safety of everyone on Victoria's roads. Often, they are the most lenient of all the Eastern States when it comes to mods, and they don't force you to get a RWC every year.

Those of you that 'know' me will know I'm not a fan, but I reckon we in Vic have it easy on this stuff.

The laws are not national because NSW refuses to to not have yearly inspections.

The only thing that annoys me about recently moving to NSW, is the crap and the cost of registering cars/bikes/ trailers here, its rediculous! And as for the 'roadworthy' every year, i have seen more POS and lower standard of cars on the roads here than any other state.

I have just paid my yearly rego for my D2 $894.85, How does that compare to the other states?

So what does a "big" bike cost to rego in NSW?
I have a ZZR1100- cost $860 and something a year in the NT.
Apparently a prang on the Z is far worse than if I were on a 250 or smaller and...
the Z is heavier on the road!!
