Not 100% sure, i was looking at it last night as i want to register my dirtbike, on the nsw website it says upto 100ml, between 101ml and 300ml, 300ml and over.
Mine is 510cc so from the rego calculator its $217 plus ctp, which i would guess at a couple of hundred more. In vic i had rec reg which was $77.
rego is a tax on ownership
if you have 3 cars, you pay 3 lots of ctp.
but you can only drive 1 car at a time.
ctp should be on the licence not the car.
more people drive unregistered cars compared to driving without a licence.
so more people would be covered if the ctp was on the licence.
but as usual the govt see's it as free money.

There was a proposal a couple of decades ago to put a levy on fuel to cover CTP. Or was it rego? Can't remember, but the idea was that user pays. As usual, the States couldn't agree, and of course it would be 'unfair" for interstate travellers to pay a levy for something they have already paid for, so...
In the US ( at least in some states ), even TPP is on the driver, not the car.

Back in the 1970s, a friend of mine wrote a few letters to the Canberra Times suggesting that rego should be very cheap and petrol should be very dear. He argued that it would encourage people to use their car less and to use economical cars.
So if you used a thirsty vehicle a lot, it would be quite expensive and if you used an economical car infrequently it would be very inexpensive.
He argued that the price could be set so that the whole exercise was revenue neutral.
So it is hardly a new idea.![]()
