The alarm is instant, the brakes only apply as the pressure drops, that can be quite a while if there are a lot of wagons to the supply.
All I know is that if we inadvertently uncoupled an air hose we would "Cop It" Big time from the Train driver and we were told it locked all the brakes up.
It is very lucky the copper didn't get run over by the train himself as he crawled under it, I think there was more panicking than thinking going on at the start.

Have to agree. Not sure I'd like to dive in between trailers on a road train to uncouple the air. I know nothing at all about the coupling on REAL trains. I might have a go though, I suppose, given my background. About 95% of the population would have no idea whatsoever. Then there's the shock factor. I've seen that enough times, and so, no doubt, have you. And Ian.

Pretty much what happens every time. Everyone takes some time to adjust. It's why the military, for example, train so much. So that thinking comes second. The first response is to do what you were trained for. Think later. Most Police, and ALL bystanders, have not trained for something like what was depicted in this vid.

If the cop had known about the air lines he would have done as suggested.

Never seen any of the police academy films, but I bet this situation was never featured.

How come the car people hit the side of the train anyway?

    cheers, DL

It should have been the first thing the cop did (while the train was stationary), before approaching the car.

You're assuming a fair bit, Ian. Often, cops in the US are part of the Sheriff's Dept, with very little training, if any. The US does not have Police as we understand it. There will be County Sheriffs, State Police ( some training ) State Highway Patrol ( some training, different to the others ), and the Feds. Even the fire departments can be poorly staffed and trained, with the same issues the cops face. Mayors are elected. Governors are elected. Judges are elected. And this happened in Texas, where this stuff is even worse. No one spends the money.

Here, I'll bet that some poor cop out in a Divvy Van wouldn't know either. To most people, a train is as mystifying as a 747.

I wouldn't have known the disconnect thing with trains or trucks unless I was a member of this forum.

    thanks all, DL

All my knowledge has been garnered from observation and relating that back to the known.
It amazes me how many people never look outside their own little world. Perhaps that's what makes Land Rover people such good company, their wide interest and knowledge.
