About to lose another Aussie icon. Alvey reels.

I never thought I'd see the day and this really saddens me.

That's sad,, was one of the first reels I ever used.
I never really liked them much, so never ended up buying one, instead I ended up with egg-beaters and drum reels. Always got annoyed when they copped a load of sand, and the mates who had Alveys just carried on.

Alveys were always the weapon of Choice by Banana benders, never really took off in the southern states where egg beaters and overheads secondly reigned supreme.
I had an alvey, but I prefered and mastered the overheads instead, the low winch mount required buy the alvey and the whipping of my hand by the departing line on the rod higher up didn't appeal to me much. At least the Alveys lasted longer than the Sea Martin which was a simple Alvey interbred eggbeater design.

Grew up with them in NZ as trout lead-lining reels on Lake Taupo. Nice simple long lasting reel.

Couldn't read the article, can anyone sum up in 10 words or less, as to what is happening? Sold to china, or closing down is my guesses.

    What's wrong with a net?

Disclaimer: I love fish on the plate. Fishing, on the other hand? Bit like watching paint dry, only far less comfortable.

Tongue in cheek. I hate seeing the slow death of this country; well, not so slow these days.

Very sad,i still have the wooden alvey 6" i inherited from my father. He used it on a home made cane 13.5ft surf rod for years.

The only reel i ever use, mainly because i generally only fish surf or estuaries.

I started using a four inch Alvey with a Jarvis walker 8 ft rod when i was about six yrs old.Still got the rod and reel.

Then i moved up to 5" Alvey and a 10.5 ft rod i got for my 13th birthday.

Later on moved up to a 13.5 ft surf rod,and the wooden Alvey, which i use now all the time.

Could never get the hang of those egg beater things,or any other type of reel,IMHO,nothing beats an Alvey.
