My father is Scottish and came out in 1966 which meant I was able to apply for a British passport about 1990. Used it to work in U.K and France as a backpacker around 1992 but it has long lapsed. Suppose I am technically still dual citizen but hadn't thought about it all until now. On the Scottish grandfather side we were a farming family from Ayrshire, near Kilmarnock. My Grandmother was from Crookston, Glasgow.
My mother's side has a long Australian colonial history. She was a Goyder and a direct decedent of George Goyder, Surveyor General of SA. Through her side I am also a direct decendent of Peter Egerton Warburton who was an early Australian explorer and also of John Wittenoom, the first WA colonial chaplain.
Very proud of both my Scottish and Australian heritage.

Are we allowed to name politicians in this thread? I've previously been banned for doing that in passing when discussing another topic. Just saying...
Imagine how many children of Kiwi citizens there would be in this country who have suddenly realized they are automatically Kiwis just by descent, even though they did nothing to apply for citizenship. Just fill in a form and NZ will send over a passport. Sweet as bro.
Interestingly, it appears my wife is able to apply for British citizenship merely by filling out an online form and paying a fee, as her mother was born in England. She is deciding if she wants to do it. She says she has no intention of ever running for political office. I think she should do it. You never know if this country will turn into a dictatorship one day and we might have to make a run for it.
Like a lot of news these days, this is of the manufactured variety. The fact is, being born here, Barnaby is an Aussie. His fathers' citizenship means he COULD apply for NZ citizenship. Won't necessarily be granted. If he is disqualified on those grounds, then that means that probably at least half of the adult population of Oz are not eligible for any political office in this country!
He has not (to my knowledge anyway) made that application, therefore, he is NOT a citizen of anywhere other than his country of birth. Should be end of story, but of course, there is so little going wrong in the world nowadays, that the media has to drum up a story from anywhere!

So how does he rescind that?
When I looked into running for the Senate 30 years ago, I was sent a booklet outlining the steps I had to take. Right up near the top of the list was words to the effect that if you hold citizenship of any other country, you must rescind that citizenship before lodging your paperwork with the AEC.
Therefore, because I actually have a foreign (not really - it's NZ) citizenship to rescind, I am eligible once I've done that, but someone who has never taken up that offer can't rescind it.
It's like a double negative - you can't rescind what you don't have to start with.
