    Are you an 'ordinary' Aussie?

If so, then you're a rare beast. There are only 5782 ordinary Aussies, according to the Census.

I was amused at this because I realized I actually am, statistically, an ordinary Aussie in every way except that the children have left home. So, the next time someone questions me about my values, I can prove I am ordinary. It would be interesting to meet the other ordinary Aussies and see if we actually are similarly ordinary.

I don't "Fit" into the "Ordinary" box at all, So I am Far from being Ordinary thank the Gods
I would think that one of the most endearing qualities of your average Australian is that they respect everyone else's Individuality and Don't "Pidgeon Hole" people like so many other countries do

No such thing. How many times have you put up with conversations with those from other Nations who try to tell you how much better their culture is, and politely nodded the head, whilst thinking " you just have no idea , Mate. ". Not for us to force our ideas and opinions on others, at least in my circle of friends, we just sit back and let the bull**** flow around us. I have never met an ordinary Aussie yet, each one has been extraordinary. At least in Qld.

"Ordinary Aussie"? Wonder how they manage to categorise people into ordinary, extraordinary etc.? Are some funny looking or a different colour or religion or speak a different lingo or are just a bit strange?
Most of those I've met reckon they're the bees knees and everyone else is a drongo. Especially when we've been drinking.......

PS. And after 45 years here I'm still a bloody Pom.

Hmm, so if the 'ordinary' Australian isn't that common, is that why reference is made to the 'everyday' Australian???

I have to admit that term gives me the ****s!

    "Are you an everyday Australian?"

"Nah mate, on every second Thursday I'm a Scotsman!"

This is apparently an interesting exercise in the meaning of statistics. We take a series of variables, determine the "average" (in this case probably the median figure, since we are dealing with integers to make sense, for example in number of children or dedrooms) for each variable, and then call the resulting combination of variables "average" or "ordinary". For anyone who has even a smattering of knowledge about statistics, it is quite obvious that one you look at even a small number of variables, the proportion that match this "average" will be pretty small.

Just thinking about the families I know, I have not been able to come up with one that matches all the criteria - even if they are close. If you look more generally, for example, a lot of the people I know own mortgaged houses - but most of them have too few or too many children, or one of the couple is not born in Australia or one does not have English heritage etc.
