i prefer live axles mostly due to better tyre wear when loaded up less likely to need wheel alignments after being off road and just simpler, not against tc and independent and the advantages they can give if i was id have a d1 not a d2a lol
be interesting to see if a d2 could do that same feat but i don't think any manual could with out a very large reduction box fitted to get a much lower low range.
done some quick checks and d3 is out of budget as i would rather the diesel over the 4L petrol and disco 4 is right on the cusp again same as the workmate cruiser's

pajero look like a decent for price for late model ones, thanks double if i got a pajero it would be a late model one

No way I'd try it in my D2. The D1 has low TC gears, so maybe...... if it had a roll cage.

You didn't really give us a budget or a particular purpose. Cruise and soft springs, plus live axles... D2A. Big family wagon, Prado. My stepson has a MY13 Prado, and it is like a fridge.. it works, and you don't really care about anything else. I hate it. It is ugly, it has the worst ride of any car I've been in for comparable price, I reckon my D2 is every bit as good off road ( if not better ), and it's equal on road, but as a tourer there is really no comparison, due to the sheer size difference. Dunno about earlier ones, and I don't want to.

Mate had a MY11 Pajero. He loved it, and for what he wanted it for it was fine. He towed a medium sized van, which it excelled at. Not in the same league as a Disco off road though. Ride was better than the Prado. Visibility out of both the P cars sucks.

FJ Cruisers are hideous, and are basically a Prado in a clown suit.

Knew a bloke who had a Great Wall something, which he swore by. Basically an older Paj, if I'm not mistaken.

As someone else mentioned, why not look at a Mahindra? Or even a SSangyong. They are both heaps better than they look.

I'm still in the D3/4 camp though, unless you can find a low K D2A TD5, with CDL and SLS., HSE for the right money. Or, not the HSE if you want manual, IIRC.

budget depends on older stuff pre 2011 id like to keep under 15 for something after 2011 30k is about max

yeah i remembered the Toyota's riding like crap but haven't ridden in anything newer and the ride of pootrols is pretty horrendous

and yeah the fj in yellow i reckon looks like donald ducks head lol but as you said are basicly a pardo/hilux

it will be to run too and from work 5mins, do the supermarket run (hour each way on pretty shocking roads, currently on some of the bumps the d2a can get over half a g of up and down from the bumps) and runs to see the family so 4-7 hours, and hopefully if i get 4x4 myself and swimbo can head out and do tracks in around the Grampians,little and big deserts, kuri krui and wombat together that way their is a 2nd vehicle to help the other all the time when we do some more serious tracks.

if i dont end up with sls on a d2a i am not too worried as i am about to try the king raised comfort springs in the d2a for a softer ride.

why wouldn't ya try it in ya d2 or is it a manual?

It's auto. I just don't reckon it is geared properly. Surfingooner's upgraded torque converter might get me to try. If I put the low TC gears from the D1 in it I'd be up for it. The D1 has a rear locker as well. I reckon I'd probably want that along for the ride as well... but it won't fit.

But if you really want to know, I'm 63 and it would scare the bejesus out of me[bigwhistle][bigsad][bigrolf]

Back to the point. I don't think there is anything out there that matches LR for every requirement you have mentioned. I'm driving, courtesy of Mario, a D2 HSE V8 atm. It rides bumps etc as if they aren't there, and it has ACE, which mine doesn't. It is comfotable, quiet, easy to see out of, warm, has a great sound system ( don't trust me, it sounds great through my hearing aids ) and does everything I need it to do, except pass petrol stations. Fix the gas system and even that won't matter.

Of course, there are RRs out there that might do what you want as well.

yeah thats the problem with the v8's and yeah l322 rangies have a very weak gbox (bloody gm rubbish) for the earlier td and well p38 is same as d2 v8 and i like doing around 1000km on a 105L of fuel (yeah in know overfilling but when on a trip it just means ya dont stop as often)
shame they dident do hse with td5 or at least none for sale

Nope. Low is what it changes. Put the thing in low first and it won't move downhill without throttle. It will idle up rocky tracks. Mine are MaxiDrive, dunno the ratios, but they are the best mod the car has. Even better than the locker. I'd love to put them behind the auto/TD5 in the D2, but then i'd have to decide on which car I want..... there's a RRC down the back....

Which V8 gets that sort of economy ?? The old range rover I have returns about 35'ishL/100km towing a caravan ( LPG ). I dream of that sort of economy from the wheezy old V8 :)

In case you didnt know the d3/4 self level when loaded so your suspension geometry is always the same. And offroad, you may have less things to knock out of alignment on a live axle but i don't know of many who have had alignment issues on their D3/4 after a heavy trip (I'm yet to have mine checked since getting it aligned after fitting new tyres).

I wanted a diesel too but at $7-10k more expensive i did some sums and discovered, on fuel cost and usage alone, you need about 200 000km to recoup $10k (and that was when 98ron fuel was $1.50/L). Add to that the cheaper servicing cost (no turbos or timing chain or high pressure fuel system) and the fact it will handle short 5 minute trips without too much problem and, unless you tow something heavy or plan to tour remotely I'm not sure you should be writing it off just yet. :)

A good D2 Td5 auto with ACE and SLS and spend the money saved on maintenance and servicing for reliability and comfort would be my choice. Buy for $10k and spend $5k on it.
