Am I Too Sensitive?

It does Not really bother Me what the Press or other people think or say about Landrovers, I personally couldn't give a Rats.
NO car is 100% reliable and they ALL have their faults and weak spots, A Landrover is NO different in this aspect.
However the technology, 4WD ability and comfort of the Landrover models over the years has been Superior to the other brands from the same years.
My Discovery is a 2004 model and I haven't seen any Jap or Yank 4WD from 2004 that has the same level of technology or comfort that My old Disco has.[bigwhistle]

Also, compare your 2004 Disco to a Land Cruiser or Patrol of the same vintage and the Disco still looks much better than the other two which just look dated and boring.

(I know that the look of a car has little to do with reliability but I wouldn't swap my 2003 D2 for a 2003 LC or Patrol)

I don't give any credence to Callinan's infomercial media (or any of the others, such as Rooth, etc). They're occasionally interesting for photographs and info on the areas they visit, but the rest of the content is quite shallow and pretty clear: to sell their bits and pieces.

IMO, you get far better quality info from places such as AULRO (or whatever special interest forums you might choose).

Recent Caravan World "motoring expert" doing a review on "Best 4wd for towing" downgraded the D4 because it "didn't accept a WDH".

Not to mention the SLS, traction control, locking centre diff, all wheel drive, hill decent control, rear air con, climate control etc. etc.

After around 100,000 k's towing this, looks like I will have to rid of it & buy somthing that will take a WDH :(

Yep, no problems here either. My last four Land Rovers have had less reliability issues COMBINED than my last Mercedes C Class. Please do not get me started. Likewise, my replacement for the C-Class, a Jag XE, has been flawless. (Made in the Solihul LR factory).

Non Land Rover owners are just jealous.

I own a small business and I had 3 hiluxs and 2 prados - we had continual problems with them - oil leaks, gearbox overheating, tail shaft faults, recalls as wel l as faulty injectors. These are well known faults so why aren't journalists critical of Toyotas? We have since moved to colorados and our running costs have significantly dropped. I personally traded in my prado for a D4 and the difference is like chalk and cheese.
So my question is - should we be tolerating false journalism or am I just too sensitive? Should Land Rover be tolerating false statements.
I could go on rambling but i look forward to reading what others think.

A lot of people talked about 'reliability issues' when I mentioned buying my Freelander 2 TD4.
A closer for me was looking at the JD Powers survey in the US - which found, (I think I remember) 2002, Land Rover just above Chrysler and Jeep at the bottom - and then again in about 2007 - Land Rover had moved up from (47th?) to 6th.
Land Rover has now slipped to about 20th - better than halfway. Which is concerning. Lexus has been consistent top marks.
I've had 'no problems' (not quite, but...)
RH rear door - electrical window - fixed itself, somehow.
RH rear door - electrical locking variable - solution 'press lock button twice'.
Key - first one - has mostly died, but not completely.
Engine re-map failed because of (I suspect) a fuel filter issue, not picked up at the time.
And that's it, kids.
The 4X4 magazine - look at the Board of Directors - all after-market Interested Parties.
And - 'shallow' doesn't cover it. It's all about camping and beer and getting there - and for the most part, failing to 'look around'. I've thrown copies across the room sometimes - 'please - we're not all that dense!'
The thing with 4WD-ing as far as I'm concerned - is to focus on the scenery, not the machinery - oh, and go into depth on the scenery (which geology, soil-type, eco-type, etc...) (biologist background here).

Sorry to to go against the thread here, but I have had two Defenders, a 90 and a 110, all from new. Both had jack shaft spline problems, one had a master clutch cylinder go on me, not to mention all the other small but niggerly quality issues. The last jack shaft failure stranded us in the Kimberley this year. I would have to say that the Defenders are not reliable but incredibly capable. That said, I am reluctant to ever purchase an LR ever again!
