Getting the most out of your tyres !

Had a bloke come around today to change the outside lights to LED's, ( It's a Vic government thing, not sure if it's done interstate) and he discovered he had a flat when he tried to leave.

Poor bloke didn't have much of a clue about his car or how to go about changing it, but he pulled out his spare ....

....................... which wasn't too flash either.

I was a bit hard on the guy, though I pulled out the trolley jack and wheel brace and changed his tyre for him.

He was genuinely quite shocked as he'd just had his car, a Camry serviced two weeks ago, (I advised him to find a new mechanic) and claimed he had paid for 4 new tyres about 50K km ago, (I advised him to find a new tyre dealer). Looking at the other 3 tyres on the vehicle, which were just roadworthy I noted that they were all different brands but the same size.

My initial thoughts were that this bloke was a complete idiot but chatting whilst changing the tyre I learned that he was a Bangladeshi student earning a quid on the side changing out light globes, so at least he was 'having a go' and not just sitting on his bum and he was certainly no dill but very ignorant of anything automotive.

It turns out that Bangladesh has just about the lowest rate of car ownership in the world at around 3 per 100,000 people so out of a population of around 160 million the chance of your average person owning a vehicle is nil so hence the knowledge that we Aussies take for granted is not relevant to the average Bangladeshi. About the same as the average Aussie being on top of the operation of a Boeing 747 I guess. Still no reason not to learn IMO but at least understandable.

You learn something new every day.

    Deano

ps. I sent him home via the local tyre dealer.

Great to hear you offered the guy a hand and some advice, that looks seriously dangerous!
I've found many foreigners from that part of the world to be out of touch with car ownership and maintenance. My neighbour had only ever owned a scooter, in his home country of India and I watched him struggle to lift his bonnet for a few minutes before I went out and showed him how to pull the cable in the cabin.
It was his first car as he had just gotten a license in Australia. His friend had told him to check the oil, but he wasn't sure where to look for that either.

I ended up showing him around the engine bay and checking it out for him which earned me some homemade Indian deserts the next day from his wife. Getting the most out of your tyres !

Luckily for him, the HWP didn't pick him up but you did.

Those tyres have generally been running under inflated - he needs to put a few more psi (or whatever the modern equivalent is) in his tyres in future.

I suspect they weren't or he got s/h ones at a much cheaper price.
And they think my Camry is unroadworthy because it has a few battle scars. Truth is it's the nice looking Camrys that don't do many km that are unroadworthy. My Camry is serviced eight or nine times a year and gets new tyres about every ten or eleven months.

Changing the lights to LEDs: It's a govt. subsidy thing. As they change to lights that use less energy, it reduces the load on the system.
A bit like the pink batt thing.

I went for a motorcycle ride with a group one day, one guy went back home half way through our day long ride because the steel belts were showing.

There are many vehicle owners that do not have a clue about their vehicles and or their maintenance requirements.
Walk through any shopping mall car park and have a look at the front wheels of the vehicles parked and you will be surprised at the number of vehicles with scrubbed out front tyres.
