The cars at my work have a pre-drive check that has to be done before moving. It includes a tyre check. As was said above, I bet that is also true for the Highway Patrol.
Don't stress on it Mate you did the right thing, Unfortunately I am willing to bet that Old Mate is still running around on those "Slicks" even after you have advised him that they are dangerous.

 AT REST

AT RESTLOL. Deano you should of handled it differently re duty of care, you could have politely told this gentleman that he was a danger on the road to himself and others and offered to take him into your lodgings, feed him and give him a room for the night whilst you source him a good roadworthy tyre from a tyre place in Packie,. Offered to give him a interest free loan to pay for it. He was on your property so your problem, but oh no you chose to send him on his way on a unroadworthy tyre. Where was your compassion towards a unfortunate fellow human being? Get him off your land quickly you thought and make it someone elses problem.'shame on you.
Any way why am I going to fit LEDs to your latest discovery, you know I hate the things that blind other road users.
Hi Guys,
I suspect that many road users can't afford $10 for petrol let alone a set of even the cheapest tyres.
Sad fact that there are many in poverty in this country but absolutely need a vehicle to get them and or their family around.
Just my bit anyway.

You're quite right Agro and none more so than international students from 3rd world countries. I can't imagine the sacrifice this mans family/village made to send him here on a student visa and respect the effort he was making doing 'menial work' to finance his existence. So perhaps I'm a softiebut I wish him well.

Interesting to note how things have changed in my lifetime - when I was growing up, it was quite usual to see tyres on the road with a strip of cords showing down the centre of a tyre.

The first car I ever owned was a EK Holden station wagon that had all round "Slicks" that I bought from our local Holden dealership back in 1971.
I didn't think that the bald tyres were much of an issue until I got the car sideways on a dirt road and nearly rolled it, I couldn't get the new tyres fitted fast enough after that episode.
IF people cannot afford or bother to keep their vehicle in a safe condition then they shouldn't drive it, It doesn't make any sense to save a few quid on basic maintenance if it ends up costing you or someone else's life at the end of the day.
Having your tyres and brakes in good condition is vital for the safety of yourself and others on the road.

If your tyres are really, really bald you probably don't want the brakes working all that well

One place I worked had moved from a company owned car fleet to car allowances. They were concerned about how people were maintaining the cars and instigated a monthly visit to the car park by a local garage who walked around the cars that were in and did a visual check. There were plenty of cars found with tyres, lights, body damage and windscreens that needed fixing/replacing. These cars and a further random sample had a visit to the garage for further checks. Even though no longer a company responsibility was put in place as they were concerned about reputational risks associated with the company image when out and about and company name if a car was involved in an accident and it was not road worthy
Had similar things with some companies I've driven for. If they repeatedly fail to listen, I document the issues and responses, put it on the bosses' desk, and tell him to fix or I quit. Failing that, I find the nearest cop/scalie , and point out the problem. They're usually only too happy to oblige with a notice to repair.
