    WHAT MAKES A CAR BRITISH

WHAT MAKES A CAR BRITISH? We were at All British Day yesterday & were having this conversation with out an answer. The reason for this was there was a Citroen Tracton there which of course was built in the Citroen factory UK because it was R/H drive & had Lucas electrical. They were not going to let him at first. So what makes a car British ? is it were it is made , who the original manufacture was or who makes them now.
The P76 which was an Australian design & built car has always been allowed in , but a Volvo which is Swedish but built in the UK by Vanden Plas is not allowed in . Lotus which is owned by Proton ( Malaysian ) but made in the UK , the latest MG which is owned by the Chinese , Daimler owned by Chrysler & not to forget BMW Mini owned by a German Co these are all allowed in. Even Jaguar & Land Rover were British , then Ford USA & now Tatta India . Most British cars today are made by non British companies , some are made in all parts of the world & some are still made in the UK.
I suppose it is like the old question WHAT MAKES A CAR A CLASSIC? You could talk about it all day & never come up with an answer.

Use the football team analogy. Is MU any less a british team despite where the owner lives?

I think if the company is or was British then it's British even if it's built in another country. If Land Rover builds cars in China are they still British? If Honda builds cars in Thailand are they still Japanese?

Dunno & can't help but it does make me wonder why all vehicle brand & model insignia badges appear to be written in English.

Hang on, maybe I'm on to something here

    What makes a car British?

The eccentric placement of switch gear. I was passenger in my mates '77 Rolls Royce today after fitting two new tailshaft unis, and every time I wanted the window down a bit I got the central locking switch instead. The actual window switch is waay down the door card from where your hand naturally sits.

Now that's a tough one .... Yeah the Citroen Traction Avant, ID19 and DS19s were built in the slough UK (there is quite a few of these cars here in Australia as they are obviously built as RHD)....... However, the Citroen ID19's I owned were built in Australia ( CKD kits built at Heidleburg down in Melboure ... as were a lot of different cars in the time due to the import taxes). Are these cars "Australian car" .... er .... I doubt i'd be welcome if I turned up to a gathering of old holdens and falcons
