I am a new member and new to the world of Disco's. My problem is I have the option to buy a 2000 TD5 5sp disco with 76 000Kms for around $25000 and a 2000 TD5 ES Auto with 186 500kms for around $20 000.
The Auto model being more my price range but I am worried about the amount of Kms as I intend to keep it for a while.
Any advice you can give me will be appreciated.
Lisa

HI and welcome,
Dont rush into buying anything the price of discos is falling like a rocket,
also dont be too concerned about high K's if the rover, disco petrol V 8 has been looked after they will go for ever
Also depending where you are get it checked over by someone who knows land rovers.........
You are entering a new world of fun and enjoyment if you end up geting a rover........

Hi Lisa,
If it was my choice I reckon the auto is the way to go from a driveability point of view (although I love my manual off road downhill).
But more importantly you should check the service records as a well serviced and maintained vehicle at 180,000km will be better than one at 75,000 km that hasn't been serviced properly.

The most important thing is SERVICE HISTORY and on a TD 5 history that the Oil Pump bolt has been checked, and the cam belt has been changed at specified intervals![]()

I think the TD5 has a chain uncle ho  , correct me if I am wrong![]()

TD5 has the chain. THe Auto is great off road. My Defender has the Disco auto and ECU. Vehicle condition and maintenance is you biggest issue. Diesels will do high K's as long as they are looked after. I would agree that a high 5's vehicle is probably looked after as the owner relies on it a lot more (I know I do).
The auto is much better than the manual in the real world. The autos last longer than the manuals I'm told. My auto is over 200k and hasn't missed a beat.
Mileage is irrelevant if its been regularly serviced.
I'd go the auto and save the money for other things. Get the auto transmission oil changed at the first service to ensure its longer life, you never know if it has ever been changed or is the original oil.
100,000Kms is a huge difference in wear and tear. Something between three and seven years driving in dog years (Kms). All kinds of exciting things could be just waiting under the hood.Originally posted by DiscoMick

An extra $5000 would work out to maybe $1000 a year. If they have comparable service histories, and I had the money I know which I'd be buying.

Ah, that'd be $1000 preventative maintenance a year for five years.
ops:
