If you dont know knots - tie lots

After a drive south from Perth yesterday, I was amazed by the stuff that had become loose from vehicles The roads were busy with holiday makers and there were all sorts of water craft, bicycles, camping gear etc lashed precariously to roof racks and trailers.
The Kwinana Fwy ground to a halt and the reason was a family had lost their possessions and were parked in the emergency lane and ducking amongst the traffic to recover what was left of their stuff.
Further down the road we spotted eskies, buckets, tiedown straps, canoe paddle, but the standout was a swag or a tent rolled up in the road
It would be funny if it wasnt so dangerous

Yeah but even if you can tie good knots, its not the knot that often is the issue but the objects being held down compress or move.
Why I usually stop within the first 10kms of any trip with loads tied down, check an readjust if required.
And yes I can tie knots.
Can even happen to heavy duty ratchet straps.

I'm a knot noob, but do have my fair share of ratchet straps which suit most applications I need for securing a load.

In a moment of weakness at Bunnings, I bought some of these for use with rope:

I look forward to having a play with them at some stage (they have been sitting in the tool box for a few months so far...)

Hence I strap all loads down and then fit a net (if possible)

Great idea! (another excuse to haunt B******s)

but, a loose end flapping in the breeze/hurricane can do naughty things, so wrap the tail around the lower leg/underneath and tie off a few times..- just to be sure To Be Sure!

Yep, I do the same and know my knots as well. A quick check and adjustment can save a world of pain. Pity those that don’t know how to tie a knob will be the ones not checking them...

Of course it does. Trouble is, who enforces it? They are too busy busting truck drivers for having one curtain buckle undone.
