Why is it so?

As we all know landrovers leak oil - now there are very few oil seals that actually hold oil in as they are primarily used to stop it leaking out when it splashes about in the engine - eg the sump holds the oil and the crankshaft seals stop it leaking out when the engine splashes it about.

Now my 6 hp Masport 4 stroke mower has an oil sump that has a bloody great vertical crankshaft running through it - the oil only stays in the engine even a rest because of the oil seal.

Like most of your cars, all of my landrovers that I have owned, including the Freelander leak oil - yet even after 10 years the mower never leaks oil even though the crankshaft seals actually have keep the oil in the the engine.

Why Is It SO? :?

Well a lawn mower marks it's teritory by eatimg the lawn.
Land Rovers don't eat , or ****, so they have to mark there territory by dropping a little oil here nd there.

Or perhaps the lawn mower just doesn't have the need for a built in rust inhibitor.

Masport have a vested interest in sustainable grass.

The only good lawn is a dead one

or a Pioneer Lawn (green concrete)

Solution:

park your Land Rover on the lawn.

And save two stroke and sweat

Neither of my rovers have leaked...

Is there something wrong? Should I return them to dealer for correction

But seriosuly... Seal life is dictated by many factors...

Installation
Operating enviroment...
- Temp
- Contamination
- Water
Frequency of use / Duration
How u clean after a trip
Chemical attack (eg... Degreaser)
Wear in components

Mine dont leak...

The D2 is at 77k and 6 years with no leaks
The TR is at 102k in 4 1/2 years and no leaks...

The TR spent the first 8-10 months playing in nothing but mud and water yet no issues.

Its usually installation problems or incorrect tolerances on the mating parts.

Cheers

Mike is probably right - it is mainly a quality control/design issue. Rover has not until recently been concerned with oil leaks - for example, until fairly recently they used oil filled swivels, being more concerned with the fact that oil is a better lubricant than grease than the fact that it leaks more easily, and the same with allowing axle oil to access the wheel bearings.
I suspect that some leaks are the result of poor surface finish of the surface the seal bears on, again, because Rover simply did not worry about it.

I think that I have a lemon 110 Defender.

I have repeatedly backed the vehicle out of the driveway to see what has leaked onto the concrete where it's usually parked.

Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Maybe we got a bad batch tombraider........

the swivel hubs leak oil because there is hardly any pressure on the seal...
installing a second metal ring will give it a bit more pressure to seal on the swivel hub....

but no matter how much pressure you have on them....mud will chew them out.....

Patience - it is not a mattter of if it will start leaking - it is just a matter of when

I bought my 01 Rangie a couple of weeks ago and it leaks oil from the transfer case. I dont think I would have given it a second look had it been leak free. I may have mistaken it for a different brand if not for the dark patch underneath.
