This is probably worthy of a new topic so forgive the hijack/diversion. ops:

My eldest son (Jono) has two mates, one a plumber (Mazda Bravo) and the other a miscreant (V8 Cruiser)

Tonight Jono has volunteered me (at their request) to give them some introductory lessons in off road driving.

I can scarcely hide my vehicle prejudice or ignore the flattery but it will be a challenge and I will accept it because regardless of the make there is much to be learned.

At least the eleven year old Land Rover can lead the way.

The other forum isn't helped by the views of the Overlander Editor who bags the D3 TDV6 in his editorial in the latest edition because the car stopped due to snow build-up in the air intake during a blizzard.

A snorkel would have prevented the problem. You don't see him bagging toymotas or missins when they drown after driving into metre deep water, when a snorkel might have saved the day also!

I suppose at the end of the day, the mag is there to make money. The demographics show that the predominant reader drives a Patrol. If you want to keep making money, you have to kowtow to your main market.

The Overlander Editor seems really likes the current crop of Landies. The only one that I've not heard him speak about is the Freelander.

Anyway, here's a sample from the thread...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Just been advised that a second of our company 2005 turbo diesel Hiluxes has blown an engine. This is the second one in two weeks. The first had 13,000kms on it and this one has done 16,000 kms. Still waiting on the verdict and will advise outcome.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Makes the Partol 3L TD look good, at least you could get 50-80K out of them............
...........
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>The 10/05 3.0td lux at my second job has just spat the motor recently.
Apparently there was no warning during driving, just boooooosht and lots of white smoke comming from exhaust. Toyota has described the event as "a catastrophic failure of piston skirt area leading to significant and non reparable cylinder damage". It has done 17,700 and was serviced every 5k by Toyota as per lease arrangements. A replacemnt motor is on its way under warranty, but has been off the road now for 11 business days.

The 3l td Navara is slightly less comfy 3 months older has 8k more on the engine but is going. Triton is similar to Navara, and the MBZ Vito (we call it the bang bus from one guys NYE adventures) has just hit 900,800 in 5 years - serviced every 20,000 kms, its a 2l CRDi turbo motor. No oil change in between standard service intervals.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>mates nissan has done two motors one 980 km after getting back from nissan and 2 weeks ago nissan told him that they used the wrong crank so gu won't be ready for another 2 weeks in the last 6 months his had the car 3 weeks...disgusting from a company like nissan.
1978 Range Rover still going strong with same donk it's had since 1978 .
Who needs new cars anyway?. You can't work on em and they are built with a life expectancy of only a few years!!!!.
Old '48 Landies will still be chugging along well after all the new crud has been turned into VB cans .

Plus all the others rust big time!.
