What are we afraid of - and is it rational?

Question: How many Aussies were killed by spiders in the last decade?
Answer: None, not one, so why are we so afraid of them?

I mentioned this to my wife, whose response was she would decide for herself what to fear. See, irrational!

Interesting story on what actually kills us. What should we really be afraid of?

Skin cancer is the top killer, so wear a hat and sunscreen.

I would argue that a lack of oxygen to the brain is what kills us. And nothing else

When looking at that ABC list of deadlies, it's pretty clear that our fear and avoidance of biting animals outweighs our fear and avoidance of things like road crashes and sun exposure. Also that biting animals are easier to avoid. Perhaps if we feared sun exposure (never went outside) and car crashes (stopped travelling on roads), spiders and sharks would be much higher up the list.

I've spent most of my life in the bush surrounded by snakes, spiders, crocs, sun, etc, never a problem. Above all it's the lunatic tourists on the roads, drunk drivers, drugged idiots, mobile phone using yuppie drivers and stupid bogun 'I'm so awesome I'll never crash' drivers on the roads that I fear the most. It can be difficult to avoid them if you love driving your Land Rover!

Not scared of Spiders but it does seem to top a lot of peoples lists. Had a Huntsman in our Caravan last time we were out in it - he was running around in there for 2 days and nights before he wandered out on his own. Others we were camped with seems more worried for us that we were.

We leave them to run around at home too - almost every window has a large black house spider in it - they do leave a mess of dead dry fly carcasses in the window sills though, but nothing the vaccy can't deal with.

My biggest fear is SWMBO - and that IS rational...

White tip spiders are bad. Funnel webs are bad. It pays to be able to recognise the baddies and act appropriately.

Fast multi lane roads are definitely dangerous if you slow down too much, or stop in a lane, on the verge, or in the breakdown lane, or walk along them.

White tips are much miligned and blamed for a lot that generally has nothing to do with them. There main goal is to eat black house spiders (which I like in the house) so I remove white tips to the garden. Been bitten by almost every type of Spider (Including white tips) but not Redbacks or a funnel web thankfully.

Flesh eating diseases are generally picked up from the garden - a scratch from a rose thorn can do it, but the victim then recalls seeing a white tip and the myth perpetuates.

White-tailed spider - Wikipedia - If you check out the study done it has a lot more detail, but couldn't immediately find it.
