Travelling between Newcastle Waters and Timber Creek, is Route 80 worth the 200 km saving, time and fuel wise?

Only if desert tracks with little traffic is what you want. I haven't been on the road south-east of Top Springs but I have traveled the other three directions. Like the Tanami Track without the traffic and the corrugations. I wouldn't go that way for the sake of time and fuel, I'd go that way to avoid the main drag and the crowds. If I was going to Timber Creek I'd spend a fortnight in the Gregory N.P on the way.
