Dave, a 4.00 departure will put you in the thick of it from Mango hill to GC. Consider Kilkoy, Valley Highway to Esk, Gatton Esk Rd to meet your partners in crime. From there Gatton Clifton (Ma Ma Ck) Rd to Warwick. You have a number of options from Warwick, Woodenbong-Kyogle-Casino if you want to follow the coast or Uralla-Walcha-Wauchope for a more direct route to Sydney.
I believe there's a pleasant, unofficial caravan park at Emu Plains.

Definitely longer, but not by 3 hrs that time of day. At least you keep moving on the secondary route, it depends what bumper to bumper traffic does to your blood pressure and patience.
I recently travelled north on that road at 4.30ish am and the traffic southbound was solid and crawling from MH to the bridge.
Not the way I'd like to start a holiday.

You won't make Nerang from your place in an hour, Bald Hills-Boondall maybe.
Smith Rd to the border is full on that time of day.

Been going south from the deagon or Brighton on ramps about 10 am for the last few weeks. Very rarely was the traffic slower than the posted roadworks limits. From there to about the Bryant’s road exit very easy to maintain 100 kms
