DI, D2, D2A Auto Info Needed.

Does the auto D1, D2 & D2A Discos have the same and now 'unobtanium' transmission Viscous Coupling Unit as the Classic Rangies?

Does this mean the Discos are a part time four wheel drive only?

Only if they do in fact have the 'locking' bit ( not all of them, remember ), and it is locked. Otherwise a better description might be AWD.

No. Part time 4WD will have drive only going to the rear axle ( OK, in some cases front ) alone. Drive is only sent to the other axle when it is engaged, usually through some sort of dog clutch or something.

As Trout says, the Discos have a centre diff. On most models this could be locked to make it a true 4WD. There is a guide somewhere as to which models had this feature and which didn't. Mine didn't, although it did have the internals necessary and thus could have it retrofitted simply, if not cheaply. In some models, the internals did not exist at all.

The D2 may be an AWD But it is a far better option (especially with traction control) than a standard 4WD without the front hubs engaged.
With the CDL engaged it is Exactly the same as any other 4WD.

I agree completely. Just being pedantic, but it's worth noting nonetheless.

    No worries
When I first got my D2a I took it down to the beach to try it out and I found that it didn't actually need the CDL to go to most areas But it was better with the CDL engaged
