We had this "mine is bigger than yours" discussion a month back but it just so happens I had to go the Sydney early sat morning from Canberra and was running late - was driving my old L series diesel Freelander.
Was able to travel around 130k most of the distance at just over 3100 rpm and still got 36 mpg - A/C on
Touched on 160kph at Bargo on the flat with tacho just under 4000 rpm - just under max power and there felt a bit more in it. All those mighty 72kw were working well as the resulting smog attested too.
So if we want bragging rights - my hippo is better outright than your old fenders on about par with a TD5 disco (dare I push the argument as say a chipped disco td5) and blows Tdi discos into the weeds.
Its not bad considering only 72 kw and the hippo is called that for a reason - heavy, fat, wide and has a big arse - a bit like its owner I guess.

TD5 Manual Fender for interest.
Mine got 140 kph pre chipped (out of Darwin),
chipped 150kph, but I backed off, so 155kph is probably it. A high range gear set from the Disco may help get 160kph but that is only a guess.

I've had the Disco TD5 at 160km/h loaded to the roof after a Simpson Desert crossing. It was actully just a smidge under that speed actually, maybe 159km/h. That was on standard Michelin 235 tyres, King 2" lift, bull bar, auto transmission and no power upgrades. We generally sat on about 140km/h down to the border of SA, and as the speed picked up the economy really dropped away.
Are these quoted speeds from GPS or speedos?? Especially relevant for the Defender fraternity.... :wink:

You buy the oil burners for economy and put up with the slug like acceleration and overtaking , then you are interested in top speed!
Seems inconsistent to me.
My 3.9 Classic is governed to 180 KMh, because of the tyres speed rating . With my mods it would probably beat 200Kmh ungoverned but boy it would be "bum puckering"
It sits on 120 Kmh with about 1mm of throttle and climbed Mt Ousley Wollongong loaded with camping gear in top at 80/90 Kmh ( because of the speed limit only) without kicking down for 90 % of the climb.
But I concede it only gets about 16-17lper 100 Km in that sort of country

I'm not particularly interested in consistently driving at the top speed or cruising at high speed, however tempting that is the open speed areas of the NT. The question was posed primarily to gauge the current performance of my vehicle to what others had experienced.
It seems from the replies that what my vehilce achieved is fairly consistent with other standard TD5's.
I can continue my happy cruising at about 120K with reasonable economy and a bit left for overtaking. Thanks for all the replies.

Once I had 175 Kph on the speedo. On the GPS it was only 164 Kph. Defender TD5 with 235/85 R16.
But this was not funny anymore.. 8O
A week ago I hit 140 overtaking a truck that was swaying all over the road and driving like a ninny. I don't think that I'd want to go any faster.
