    Flickr

    Hi All,

Flickr (the free image hosting web-site) has been purchased by SmugMug - which I believe isn't free.. Which is a real bummer - I've only just finished moving all of my images from Photobucket onto Flickr, and now it seems like I will be on the hunt for another free provider.. Grr

Have a look on the SmugMug site - I think that their basic plan is about $5 per month, although I'm not sure if that is USD or AUD...

I am looking into Imgur - although it will take ages to move everything across... I probably should just do what ByteMark has done - set-up his own server, I just don't have the time though!

i doubt flickr will change anytime soon.

smugmug have been around longer than Flickr

smugmug is where you put pics you want to sell and flickr is where you store the rest, generally speaking

personally i think it is a good thing as they will actually improve it and i think keep it separate.

A lot of years ago I got really sick of free hosts changing URLs or not staying up. Given that it was free though, but it meant moving things and changing links all of the time etc which was a pain. In the end I bought a domain name, found a paid host, setup a website my self with a gallery and have preferred it like that as I know it will always be there (hopefully). I think it has been the best way to do it.

trouble is many of the cheaper hosting mobs have cpu, file count and inode limits that will seriously hamper anyone doing it in the long term.

I guess it depends on what you want from it and how much you want to pay. I havent had any of those issues, mine have been storage which the host seems to increase with time anyway, just have to ask for it. The other is the nukber of SQL databases being limited - gallery, forum, and 1 only 1 spare. But for someone just wanting a gallery I would have thought there would be no probs.

This is the mob I use, but there may be better ones out there

Then again, perhaps thats not a cheap one like what you're saying.

you should be able to see your limits in cpanel

it should also show you how much of it you are using.

Cloud storage services are a much better solution for data/image storage.

I’ve killed my web site, not sure I’ll ever bring it back online...

unless you want to publish your data / pics

but google photos is good enough for stuff you want to share as it is unlimited for low res stuff

and a good backup solution for all including iphone users...
