    Close Nit Community ??

Every tragedy or big event the opening words of the reporters goes along the lines of........the close nit community is shocked or grieving, devastated etc

Just reflecting on the community I live in

Neighbor to the left we are great friends with
Neighbor to the right, he is a nice guy....
Neighbor across the road....all we get is the evil eye....although his neighbor we have friendly chats to
Around the corner is a landy nutter who I say g’day to

Other than the above that’s the only people I know.......

Do I live in a close nit community?? I wouldn’t think so. Although there is a house hold at the end of the street that for the last 3 years have open there gate, invited the street for Xmas drinks and nibbles...we missed the first two and the 3rd was washed out.....I suppose they are attempting to pull the ‘community’ together.

There was a police shooting a few years ago i our suburb.....would you believe the close nit community were shocked......the event didn’t bother us, we just continued on as normal.

Just don’t get the ‘close nit community’ reference for every event.

What’s the definition of close nit?

It is one of the medias favourite 'catch cries'. Just like when they parade someone in their dressing gown at their front door to make comment "ooh it is usually such a quiet street"....or "I fear for my kids safety on this street now". I DETEST it....I watch the news for the facts...not the opinion of mr/mrs dressing gown in the close knit community....long live SBS world news where we don't get that tabloid crap.

Yeah love it how the journalist that don’t even come from the area are instant eggsperts on the community.

Don't forget the 'expert' doing an interview in front of a bookshelf full of literature.

PS... I think it's 'Knit' not 'Nit'

Devastated is the over used word this day and age, every one is devastated. It sort of takes the seriousness away from the word if used in every day occurrences .
Eg. A car gets hit, the owner was devastated. I'm sure if some one had a family member murdered they would be devastated also. So should they use words like seriously devastted, or uber devastated, or mega devastated so we can gauge the degree of devastation

The town I grew up in I would have considered close knit. Less than 1000 people though, but almost everyone knew everyone - really. As a kid we knew who lived in every house of every street even if you didn't talk to them. On a Saturday night the Cricket club, tennis club and bowls club all ended up at the pub together.

Where I live now, I know most of the neighbours in the street, around the corner at the back, etc but I wouldn't call it close knit - as mentioned it is an over used word when these sort of things happen.

They said, "I was devastated the other day when I got tagged,,, the clown was mortified with the thought I was going to "deal" with him"

The reality was,,, I was ****ing ****ed off, and he was ****ting bricks.

I "absolutely" love this thread. It's always been something which got right up my hooter all this "close knit" crap. If our suburb is anything to go by most of the inhabitants if they don't actually hate each other, totally ignore the neighbours anyway.
We have lived where we do for over 30 years..... next door is a total a-hole and knows it and so does everyone else. Other next door are nice Scots/English, next door to them are Scots and again nice.
Over the road are fairly new at about 4 years and never speak to anyone. According to the paddy up the road they're either Russian or Scots he can't tell the difference.....
Where as we all used to wave a greeting if seen out in the garden or on the road, there's some very savage looks from some these days and I won't mention their possible origins.
There's also an ex. third rate stringer for our very third rate local rag who considers everyone else beneath him. That's OK 'cos no one likes him anyway.
I refuse to watch anything called news on the commercials because of this crap type of reporting and stick to the ABC who may well be heavily left wing in some things, but their reporting generally is not too bad......
