    Not nice.

Got a nasty threat from someone today because I sold an item I had for sale on Gumtree to someone else. Shorty history of what happened. I put an advert on selling a Nanacom as it couldn't be upgraded from a Defender tool to the D4 so obviously of no further use to me.
Good quick response with an email from a bloke who had been looking for one..... if I sent it he would send the money! Yeah right. I responded with if you send the money I'll send the item.
Heard nothing back so I switch off phone and computer around 1900hrs last night as per normal...... electronic gizmos do not rule my life.
But this morning received an email saying that was OK what are your banking details..... sent them off at 0630.
Heard nothing and a couple of hours later someone rang and immediately agreed to buy it, details sent and money in the bank within about 15 minutes. I emailed the first bloke that the item had been sold.
Up the PO and packed the goods and posted it off to the new owner and then went to the swimming pool with the Cook as she does hydrotherapy there.
Got back to find 2 messages and one call missed.
Rang the caller to get abuse about being a Pom (after he picked the accent) and having a lack of integrity and ending with the message "Don't worry, you won't be hard to find as I have friends over there".
He also said he'd deposited the money and then I tell him it's sold and he'll tell the police about me (or words to that affect) ......total "bollocks" as they say and the money has still not appeared in my account.
Last I heard from him was that LR owners are normally nice people who can be trusted but that I'm an "asshole". So he can't spell either.
Not a nice attitude from someone purporting to be a nice LR owner......
I and others will now know who is the person of integrity and who isn't.
Got to give it to gumtree, they certainly attract plenty of GUMNUTTERS.

I'll be honest, it was a bit of a d!k move agreeing to sell it to someone else after you sent the bank details to the original buyer. Unless you gave the original buyer a clear/concise opportunity to commit to a time to pay and he didn't come through, I'd say the original buyer has reason to be PO'd. Just because someone doesn't pay in a timeframe you think is reasonable (i.e an assumed timeframe), doesn't really make it okay to agree to sell to someone else.

I'm busy too sometimes and I don't live with my phone attached to me. I think I'd be annoyed.

In the same breathe, the attitude displayed by the original buyer afterward the sale is not okay either.

    Just my 2c.

Like anything else "First in Best dressed" wins the day.
IF your first buyer was "Dinkum" he would have done the bank transfer ASAP and the deal would have been done.
As you were selling the item and not offering it up as a "Lay Buy" the first buyer that fronts up with the cash gets the item, Simple.
As far as I am concerned a deal is a deal and if you agree to buy something you pay immediately, You first buyer dithered about and didn't fulfil his part of the bargain so tough bickies to him.

Yes I may have assumed too much that he would pay up straight away but if he had been looking for just that item for a while you'd think he would have got onto his bank account immediately.
Don't forget he also said he'd paid yet nothing has come into my account hours later unlike the purchaser whose deposit appeared within minutes plus he sent a copy of the transfer details.
No excuses for threats or abuse just because you miss out on something...... especially after reckoning LR owners are generally good types.

ATH, by posting this story you have implicitly invited opinions, so here's mine...
I think the bloke had good reason to be annoyed, although he expressed his annoyance in a totally inappropriate and unpleasant manner, possibly even an illegal manner, given the thinly veiled threat.
There was an agreement made with him when he accepted your 'you send the money and I'll send the item' offer and it was confirmed when you sent him your bank details. He obviously considered the item sold at this point. My experience is that it can take 24 hours for a bank transfer to appear in the recipient's account. Or perhaps he was at work with no computer access until his break, etc. Making yourself incommunicado from 1900hrs but requiring immediate responses from the other end is a little unreasonable.
Being 'gazumped' when you consider yourself to have entered into an agreement to purchase, is something that will get anyone riled. I would have told the second bloke 'sold pending payment' and put him on the standby list.

if you go into a shop and ask the shop salesperson if can have an item, and you'll come back soon with the money, do you expect to receive respect from the salesperson?
Consider yourselves in the shoes of the salesperson too if you do think about it! As a salesperson would you given them an item expecting them to come back 'later' with the money?
So, as the buyer with no money, you pop out to get the money needed but someone else comes in during that time and buys it.
And, being the last one in stock .. do you go off you're nut at the salesperson and threaten them with violence?

The comment "if you send it, I'll send the money" from the first potential buyer would have made anyone sus about them immediately!(alarm bell No1).

I have to also disagree with the majority of responses made up to this point, so my vote goes with the seller in this situation.
First buyer seemed disingenuous, money didn't make it in a timely manner, and a better more respectful second buyer surfaces.
Second buyer obviously had every intention to buy, first buyer's intentions are unclear, and most likely dubious from the outset!

I'd have gone with the second buyer too even if I had agreed to sell to buyer one.
It's not about first in first served .. it's more about filtering out the potential dropkicks and dealing with genuine types!

Dunno if others have read the comment ATH made, that the money that the first buyer claimed to have deposited never appeared in the buyers account!(alarm bell No2).

What worries me more tho is that the indefensible is being defended here, even tho it's only up to a limited point!

Only thing I'd have done differently to the OP is report the so called 'buyer' one to the cops for the threats made!
My guess is that buyer one would have made a dubious transfer, waited a day and then made a claim to have the transfer reversed or something .. probably via an overseas banking system, or whatever.
