    Might be moving to Newcastle

    Hello all

I'm weighing up a possible move from Melbourne to Newcastle. Curious to know what it is like as far as a place to live, work and play goes.
The big part driving it is the price of houses in Melbourne, plus a few good work opportunities have come up.
Looking on realestate there seems to be plenty of houses in my price range that would suit me, I'd appreciate any comments about suburbs to consider/avoid.
Also interested to get in touch with anyone working in engineering or maintenance for a mining company

I’ve lived in Newcastle (Lake Macquarie area) all my life (44) minus a few when I lived over in WA

    Where are you looking??
    Kids? Partner?

I grew up in Caves Beach

Lived at Belmont for 18 years and now moving to New Lambton to start the next chapter.

    Great beaches
Pretty close to the bush and mountains

Going gang busters in the CBD of Newcastle with an incredible amount of new building going up and “Revitalise Newcastle” projects etc!!

If your looking at mining and traveling to the mining area it’s now a fairly good run with the Hunter Expressway.

A lot of great cafes in town and lots of cultural things happening.

And the weathers pretty great all year round not too hot in summer or cold in winter!

    Just a start anyway!

    Cheers Lemo

Like Lemo said. Terrible place, you won't like it.
I've spent most of my life in Swansea bar a few years in Wallsend. Wallsend's a great spot in regards to shops and services, fairly central to most places and it's proximity to the major transport routes is handy. Swansea is pretty much the opposite, there's not much out here, eg. about 1/2 hour to my nearest auto parts shop etc., but I'll cop that for the lifestyle.

We’re looking at moving from Sydney to the area. Our daughter lives in Merewether and we’ve spent a bit of time in the city. I like the vibe.
I need to be 2 hours from the airport (Sydney), and can just do it from Caves Beach. We like It there and have been told it’s a good area.
Also was told Eleebana, Valentine, Redhead are good. Parts of Belmont and Floraville also. But I’ll leave that to the brains trust.
Western Lake Mac is closer to the M1, but I haven’t been able to find out much about it Had rellies at Dora Ck in the 60’s and 70’s but it seems a lot of it is flood prone.....

Hi all, sorry I got a bit bogged down. Thanks for the responses, very helpful Bluetoes, I'll sort my PMs out.

I need to spend a bit more time on the ground to get a feel for whereabouts I'd want to be.
No kids/no partner, but looking for 2/3br and the usual garage space for 2 cars/projects/junk.
Thanks Hugh, I'll add those to the list to check out. I'm guessing you're a pilot on 2 hr call out from standby. Know that all too well, but from the other end of the phone.

I spent a bit of time there in my previous job and really liked it. Get in quick though as it is now seen as a sea change for sydneyites who sell for a million plus and still want to be a commutable distance to Sydney.

We have lived there, twice.... early 2000’s and for basically 2014.
    Lemo provides a good synopsis.
Hunter and industrial areas (if that’s where you will be working) can be a bit of a drive from the ‘burbs. Compared to Melb commutes, it’s easygoing.
Fascinating history to the place if you dig around... literally you could be living on top of an old colliery.
We like the place; economic and employment circumstances were different we could well have stayed permanently. Hence why we were willing to go back a 2nd time.
The AFL leagues are on the rise for us who follow it.
So if you are moving up from southern areas you will enjoy the beaches and the outdoors.
But be warned.... if you are going to the SCG for an AFL game the first 2 hours from Newcastle are easy on the freeway it’s the last 6km that will take you more than an hour.
Newcastle is not a transient place compared to other places so people can be very settled in their social groups, but it’s an honest place. And people love a chat and a beer.
Would I go live there a 3rd time... if could live in the beachside burbs, learn to surf, do some sailing at Belmont and not have to work! Yes

Amen to that. A house around the corner from me was recently put on the market for a price that some thought was a little bit optimistic. Lo and behold 2 Sydneyites got into a bidding war over it and drove the price up even further. Now about a quarter of the houses in that street have "For Sale" signs out the front.

Well I am not sure that is the place for you - I have lived in Belmont (and other areas) since 1973 and just came back to Canberra from there last night.

The one road from the Central Coast to Sydney - the M1 is prone to major closures due to accidents and can be mighty unreliable. My sister in law had to go to the airport from Marks Point the week before last and it took her almost 5 hours due to a car accident on the M1.

I used to commute from the Central Coast to the Sydney CBD and back daily in the mid 80s and I would be either late for work or get home late at least once per week.

Lake Macquarie (east side) and Newcastle east side would be the pic though the Hunter does seem to have more than its fair share of bogans - out west and Windale.

Also the climate is a bit humid in summer - even now - had arthritis all day yesterday but as soon as I got back to the highlands last night all well.

If you are looking around Caves Beach also consider Catherine Hill Bay as there is a new subdivision going in there, Murrays Beach though there are some weird greenie planning rules in there or Nords Wharf.

Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the lower Hunter have some nice areas but you so need to do your homework first.
