Not always viable to change lanes, single file makes more sense for both.
They are legally approved to ride 2 wide and if anything that should make it easier for motorists to pass as the line of cyclists is shorter. Its actually the blatent disregard for the road rules by motorists which are causing the problems and the desire for single file so they can "just squeeze by" illegally when they should be moving into the next lane to overtake.

It doesn't, as noted several times.
1m passing laws will require you to move over to an adjacent lane whether they are single file or not, so riding 2 abreast makes the group shorter. As noted several times.
I am a fairly experienced rider, and if I sense some impatient driver is going to try and squeeze past me instead of waiting I will ride in the left hand side of the lane but in the tire tracks to avoid the inevitable attempt to unsafely pass.
Conversely, the patient drivers who sit behind me waiting to get past usually do so for a short period of time as I pick a safe point for me and wave them through. Everyone that I know around Sydney does the same thing.
It really is funny how a bit of courtesy and care for someone else's safety goes a long way instead of trying to save those precious seconds of time you will inevitably waste somewhere else without a thought.
Waiting to pass safely will cost you at the absolute most about 30 seconds. You have spent longer arguing with someone on the internet about the whole situation.
Well I cycle, ride a motorbike and drive and I won't put myself in danger so to me they don't make sense.

Up our way the road shoulders are either non-existent or littered with loose stones & glass with potholes along the left hand edge of the bitumen. There is also quite often a depression along the left wheel line which can be very slippery as water sits there. Riding 2/3 across the lane is often the furthest left you can ride. If I hear a vehicle approaching from the rear then I also give a slight wiggle in my riding line so the motorist is forced to think twice about their passing clearance as it alerts them to the fact that I might have to deviate to avoid a pothole or something.

If this is a real issue then I suppose I can get upset when i see cars using the bike lane as an alternative to staying in what has been allocated for them ?
This whole thing wouldn't be an issue IF drivers AND riders showed some common sense an common curtesy on the road.
