Build a d1 ute, you know you should.
As others have said, if you go down the Nissan path, the D22 is the pick of them.
Build a d1 ute, you know you should.
2nd the d1 ute idea, d22 is a bucket of bolts.
Typical Nissan crap suspension, poky interior and generic tacky interior.

Not handy enough to build a D1 Ute...
How many working bees would that be?
I’ll provide the car, the shed and the snags.....
I have owned a couple of Nissan 4WD's, A G60 and an old tray back that I can't remember the year of but it was pretty old.
Both of these were pretty cheap to buy and mechanically they were bullet proof But both rusted out pretty badly in the end.
I did get a really good run out of both vehicles before the dreaded cancer got them and both of them were super capable and tough little trucks.

Don’t ignore a Triton.
We bought a 98 diesel with new tyres canopy and racks for 1500. Used it for hardware and tip runs renovating. Ended up taking it camping too.
Great little Ute which we sold 12 months later for 2500.
Simply view whatever you get as per its intended purpose.
Personally I wouldn’t bother with a series if you are doing 50km runs to town. You can have aircon, pwr steering and hear a radio.
Certainly wouldn’t waste a minute thinking of building/buying some hybrid mod Ute of any brand for what you want to do.
yes I agree.
The idea of D1 modded..just an idea.
What I really want is to buy something that I dont need to think about - just use it.
An old triton could be ok too..thks.
for paddock bashing/carrying duties, I don't reckon you'll beat a Rodeo V6 for all round capability/price ratio.
Cheap as chips, the V6 is indestructible, but a full service can cost a fair whack when it comes time to doing the cam belt/tappet clearances.
You'd easily find a TF(late 90's early 00's model) for between $2-4K, spend some $'s to make it good .. it'll last you a lifetime.
Just avoid LPG converted, as the heads wear out(valve guides) at about 200k klms.
The 4cyl was OK too(mate at the courier co. we worked had one), no where near as smooth as the V6(3.2lt) and used more fuel in many situations too.
Easier to find in dual cab 4WD than single cab versions for some reason too.
Early '00's RA models were supposed to be a bit better, V6 had the 3.5lt engine. about $5-10K.

I'd give the Jackaroo 3.5 V6 a miss due to known heavy oil consumption issues. The later V6 - 3.6? - seemed to not be affected by this issue.
Any early model petrol Hilux or Triton should be fine for your needs. Old diesels may run forever or need a swag of money spent on them a week after your purchase.
The idea of a late model Great Wall, Tata Xenon or Mahindra Pik-Up may not be as silly as it appears. They do not hold their value very well at all but seem to be snapped up pretty quickly on the used car markets so they may have that ideal combination of late model reliability teamed with not many dollars needed to by one.
